Capsule wardrobe for a Housewife

With errands to run and children to look after, life can be very hectic for you and your time is often limited. Creating a capsule wardrobe for yourself will give you one less thing to worry about and ensure that you look fabulous at every opportunity.

It's time to start experimenting. Why not start with a look that is timeless and very popular this season, as evident at this year’s Emmy Awards, the nude look.

A nude look is about keeping the skin neutral. Whether you are doing it for everyday or for the night you can change it accordingly. First apply your foundation, concealer may be applied to correct uneven pigment as is quite common within Asian skin. Try Supercover Professional Make-up, the foundations can also be used as concealers. Bobbi Brown foundations and sheer finish loose powders also are available in a wide variety of colours. Set with powder then start concentrating on the eyes.

Maybe you want just a sweep of shadow across the eye, try colours such as taupe, champagne and brown. For more definition, apply eyeliner and mascara. For a more dramatic look, a smoky eye is a must. Try Chanel - Les 4 Ombres Quadra eyeshadows (Kaska Beige, Nymphea, Spices, Mystic Eyes) use colours either alone or together to create smoky eye. The contrast of the eye to a nude lip will look stunning.

To begin the lips, apply a little foundation to even out if needed. Follow with a nude lip-gloss or a sheer lipstick; you can also use a neutral lip liner. Colours usually associated with a nude look are pale and flesh toned. Try a lipstick with a shimmer such as Givenchy Rouge Interdit Shine (beautiful range of colours) or Bourjois - Effect 3D Max lip-gloss. Finally for the cheeks, warm toned colours work perfectly for this look. Try a warm pink, coral or brown and apply lightly.

The aim is to find a perfect neutral palette for your individual skin. Asian skin comes in shades ranging from very light to very dark and every shade in between (Archie Panjabi, Padma Lakshmi, Lakshmi Menon). Finding the right colours involves trying and testing products, whether it being from the more expensive ranges or the high street ranges. The end result should have you feeling confident and beautiful in this look.

Blazers are what we have seen to dominate the ideal cover up no matter what the season, lightweight blazers can be worn in the hotter months along with pale coloured blazers to accommodate the summer heat.

Pastel colours; nudes, white and pastels are ideal, as they give of a more fresh and subtle look unlike the greys, blacks and browns we wear during the winter. See all the item images below.

Prints are a big trend this season, especially florals. Wearing a flower print blazer ideally with a three quarter length sleeve is just a hint of edge when paired with simple vest tops and jeans; we want the jacket to do all the talking. Textures also make a comeback too so lace and silk are great alternatives, yet the waterfall jacket also gives a playful element. Waistcoats are definitely ideal too, as they give you layering without weight. A waistcoat provides a bohemian look; alternatively, a waterfall front waistcoat gives a more tailored feel that will be suitable for the office.

I believe during the summer you need to keep your look clean and fresh, meaning not too many bold colours. Think pastels, whites, creams and light florals! I personally would opt for a mid wash skinny jean with a white vest top, completing your look with a floral print or pastel coloured blazer with gold jewellery. The reason I say gold is that I believe it looks better when worn in summer and this would then be suitable for a less formal occasion. For office wear I would suggest a peg leg trouser, Capri pants or slim fit trouser with a pretty cami and a lightweight blazer or waistcoat.

Till next time!

First things first, it is really important to plan ahead for a first date and make sure that you have enough time to get ready.

If you’re meeting up with your date after work it is important to set your alarm early before work, making sure you have enough time to shower and wash your hair!

Select a number of outfits the night before a date and try everything on. You should not be rushing or choosing something out of your wardrobe last minute only to discover that your favourite dress has a stain on it or the hem is hanging down on your skirt. If you have a friend or member of family around why not ask them to have a look at your in your outfit. Choose someone who will give you an honest opinion, not just what you want to hear.

Don't wear too much makeup and don’t choose anything too revealing to wear. Stay with clothes you feel comfortable in – this will automatically give you confidence, which will show in your body language. Wear your best underwear – even though your date won’t see it. Matching/sexy underwear is an instant confidence booster.

Use a little and light spray of your favourite perfume - too much scent can be a turn off.

Go easy on the jewellery, less is more. You want to look classy and stylish and not like you are wearing half of the local jewellers!

In short, an image consultant and personal stylist are really not too dissimilar... they are both in essence stylists/consultants (whatever you want to call them) whose job it is to make you look and feel better about yourself.

The term Image Consultant is perceived by some to be an old fashioned term for a Personal Stylist, which is far trendier to talk about today!

Many who call themselves ‘Image Consultants’ consist of a slightly older generation of consultant who have a desire to make a business out of working with ladies of a similar age, analysing colours and working from style theory rather than integrating more creativity to their tasks. They also act as ‘consultants’ (as the name suggests) and work closely with businesses and the corporate market place, whilst Personal Stylists tend to work more with individuals.

However, a ‘Personal Stylist’ is someone who tends to concentrate more on your style and high fashions that work for individuals. On average they tend to be a lot younger than image consultants and appeal more to younger audiences... they can often be heard talking about ‘Personal Branding’ and other similar buzz words.

So... let’s put this to bed shall we... simply put Image Consultants tend to be more corporate whilst Personal Stylists tend to be more individual led. But there are very few differences between the two.

When did you first realise that you were a lean, mean commerce machine?

From a young age, I've always wanted a career in business and always wanted to be finanially independant. I only know how to do business, I wanted to a dancer too but i didn't think that would pay the bills.

What was your fondest off camera memory of The Apprentice?

The Apprentice was a great experience and for me, i really enjoyed the bonding that took place during the 'treats' and back at the house when we all cooked dinner for each other and watched DVD's together.

What was it really like working with Sir Alan Sugar and are you still in touch?

Working with him was a great experience. A real plus to add to the CV.
We speak every now and again but that was a previous chapter in my life, i'm now onto a new one.

What gave you the inspiration to set up Chiconomise?

I was fed up with having to search 1001 different sites to get a discount and found that heaps of the sites had hardly anything on it which I loved or was useful. So I set chiconomise up just for girls covering all the things that we love.

There are quite a few voucher code sites out there, what makes Chiconomise different?

We are one central site for everything. We scour all the voucher sites to get the best deals, we negotiate our own, list sample sales and high street sales and also list 24 hour 'daily' deals. We are the only site in the UK which pulls all of this infomation into just one place.

What happens in a typical day in the life of Michelle...

If it is a week day then it is straight up and straight to work. I'll either spend the day in my home office, out meeting brands or working the team. I also do personal development coaching or give business seinars so every day is different. If it's a weekend then I will always be out doing different things. I like travelling or taking part in sports challenges or just having fun.

What's next for Chiconomise?

We are going to make the 'daily' aspect much bigger so that everyone can see at a glance all the things that are happening in their area, every day. We are also shortly launching The Chiconomist which will help women manage their money better.

What words of advice would you offer women inspired to start and build their own business?

GO FOR IT. It is so easy to talk about things but life is too short for talking, it needs to be all about action. Yes, it is scary - yes it is challenging but it is always better to have tried than to have not.

While we may be delighted with this heat wave hitting the U.K, the pressure is on to find fool proof ways to dress to impress whilst still looking and feeling cool. This can be difficult to achieve sometimes, so here are my top 10 tips to staying fresh, stylish - and cool! - right through the summer.

  1. The hand fan. Invest in a hand held fan for the summer sun as China and Japan are not the only countries where ladies can get away with using fans. These wonderful, useful accessories come in a variety of colours, textures and patterns, so they are stylish as well as being compact. The refreshing addition to your outfit that can slot right into your hand bag.
  2.
  3. The Skort. Yes, this is a skirt/short collaboration, which is ideal for this warm season as tight fitting clothing is a big NO NO for the next two months. The skort allows you to have the freedom of a skirt while also providing coverage if the wind blows!
  4.
  5. Cool off regularly. Make sure you have plenty of breaks, if you are lucky enough to have free time to soak up the sun, and either take frequent showers or, if you cant get to a shower, carry some wet wipes in your bag and wipe yourself down when you feel you are getting too hot. Always remember to reapply your suntan lotion afterwards.
  6.
  7. Hats on. To quote an old saying - "if you want to get ahead, get a hat!", and make sure you cover your scalp, and the nape of your neck, either with a stylish hat or a scarf. A lot of people underestimate sunstroke but if it catches you out it can mean bed rest for around two days, resulting in you feeling very ill and missing all the sun, fun and relaxation. So be safe, be fashion forward and enjoy your summer.
  8.
  9. Sandals. Care for your feet, as sweaty feet can be unpleasant, uncomfortable, ruin your day and lose you friends! So always make sure to wear a good pair of sandals, to get some breeze to your toes and allow them to remain fresh and dry, especially if you are on your feet all day.
  10.

  11. Linen. This is the perfect fabric for summer, keeping you casual, chilled, stylish and able to move around with no restrictions, while keeping the heat at bay. Say yes to linen shorts, shirts, trousers and jackets.
  12.
  13. Sunglasses. Cover your eyes with some stylish shades, while protecting your eyes from the sun. This is definitely an essential "must do", as it prevents you from damaging your eyes and getting those ageing wrinkles. Who needs surgery…..?
  14.
  15. Kaftan. The netted fabric of a kaftan will both protect you from sun damage and keep you fresh and cool, coming in a variety of colours and patterns means that you can literally live in them all summer long.
  16.
  17. Bikini. If you are lucky enough to have a swimming pool, or know some one that does, then waste no time in getting that bikini/ swimsuit out. There is a perfect swimsuit out there for every one, whatever shape or size you are, so don’t be shy because in this weather you will need to cool off by diving right in.
  18.
  19. Non fabric picnic mat. Find a bamboo mat for your carefree, summer picnic, instead of a fabric mat. They rarely heat up and don’t cause you to perspire, so you will be able to enjoy your long, relaxing day without having to worry about staying dry and sweat free.

Follow these top 10 tips and you are guaranteed to look good, feel great and stay cool through the long summer days (and nights)!

Hi Anna, the two lucky winners were D Prada & J Ridley. Keep a look out for the next competition happening very soon.

Wear a wedding dress that suits your body shape

  • With so many dress choices out there the task is indeed a daunting affair. Don’t be fazed by what seems like hundreds of different dress styles and avoid advice from hard selling shop assistants (some benefit from substantial commissions).
  • Everyone is individual so remember, what might look fabulous on somebody else may not necessarily suit your body shape or proportions.
  • Take a friend along who has a similar build and frame to you, when you pick out a dress get her to try it on for you as well. It’s always easier to see what you like and dislike on somebody else.

Focus on enhancing your best bit

  • The secret to looking great whatever size you are is to enhance the bits you like about your body.
  • For example, if you have well toned arms, beautiful shoulders and neck then don’t just go for a typical strapless style; draw attention to this area by choosing a dress with an unusual neckline or a halter neck style for instance.
  • Accessories can also draw attention to the parts of your body you feel most proud of.

It’s not about what you wear but how you wear it

  • You ARE gorgeous so just you remember that – YOU are the one getting married after all!
  • We’ve all heard of the saying ‘fake it until you make it’. Outer confidence is easily improved – it’s all about looking the part. Wearing your wedding dress practice walking around in front of a mirror, the idea is to feel confident wearing it so it’s a chance to perfect and assess your posture.
  • YOU are the lucky one getting married so wear your biggest smile ever – you will instantly look and feel more confident without even knowing it!

Face your wedding party with confidence

  • Shop around for a fabulous make-up artist and once found ask for a referral before you commit.
  • Ensure your make-up enhances your natural features whilst still making YOU look recognisable afterwards.
  • After the trial session with your make-up artist, ask him or her to take a photo of your make-up so you can see what it looks like in photographs, and tweak it if necessary.

Feel confident underneath it all

  • Never underestimate the power of sexy underwear, there’s nothing like wearing beautiful lingerie to make you feel like a million dollars.
  • Book yourself into a spa for a blissful pampering session to relax your senses. Stress can build up in the run up to the wedding itself so it’s a great chance to treat yourself to a bit of me time and reflect on the remaining planning. If budget is tight why not organise a DIY pampering session at home by yourself with a selection of your favourite products.
  • (if required). As you will want it to be absolutely right getting it done a week or so before the wedding is recommended, this will ensure it still looks freshly cut but leave long enough that there is time to fix it if there is an unexpected mishap.

Now is the time to start working on your skin. On your wedding day, you'll be having close-up photos taken. Even a relatively nice complexion can benefit from six months of stress-relief, proper nutrition, and lots of water. Drinking 8 to 10 glasses daily will help clear up blemishes and make your skin more luminous.

It's hard to be beautiful when you're stressing out too much. Start out by dealing with the people who stress you out, then practice these great relaxation techniques:

Deep Breathing - Lie down on the floor in a quiet place and close your eyes. Inhale deeply through your nose, letting air flow into your stomach area. Picture your body filling with peace as you inhale and the stress flowing out of you as you exhale deeply. Let your mind clear, as you focus on your body filling with air. Repeat until your breathing is slow and relaxed.

Stretching - Take time to stretch, breathing deeply as you do so. Yoga is a great way to stretch, de-stress, and clear your mind as well as help build strength, energy, and relieve tension while you're at it. You might also want to talk to your doctor about good nutrition and exercise routines too.

Watch what you eat - When you’re stressed, avoid caffeine, chocolate and alcohol – these foods are easy to reach for, but they will only increase your stress levels. Again, drink lots of water and try to eat more vegetables, which will help keep your system clear.

Have time to think - If you need to think clearly go for a ten-minute walk outside and avoid thinking about anything wedding related. Instead focus on the view/surrounding area and how nice it feels to be outside. You’ll come back in far more able to deal with what’s going on.

Don't forget to give yourself a break and pat yourself on the back every day. Remember the few small things that you did well each day and got organised. Whether it's booking your make-up artist, short listing your florists or writing out the wedding invites, a lot of good can be achieved in one day - and it's something to be proud of.

Wising you sall the happiness in the world, enjoy one of the best days of your life.

I reckon we would all love to nip and tuck some bits of our body to reflect a leaner shape and smoother silhouette- we’re girls, for goodness sake! Shapewear in the UK is becoming increasingly popular with major high street department stores all ‘doing’ their versions on the look-a-like flesh coloured waist and thigh cinchers and the multli-way dress slips. There are so many products to choose from but where do you start in terms of knowing, which will give you the best results?

Just to throw another product into the mix we recently discovered Ardyss International, a company that has developed The 2 step Body Magic range, innovative body-shaping undergarments with an anti oxidant juice Levive with the sole purpose of improving your health and shape for the better inspite of changing lifestyles .

So, why are The Body Magic products different from the rest? Well the secret is in the technical design of the garment and the entire range was designed by a team medical engineers and an orthopedic surgeon. Unlike so many department store quality shapewear garments, each Body Magic product is actually engineered to lift and shift fatty tissue through a process called ‘lipotransportation’. There are a series of panels and boning, which has been strategically placed to move fat from unwanted areas such as the lower abdomen and love handles to more desirable areas such as the buttocks. In addition to the panels, the garments also have additional boning, which although you’d find in many corset type shapewear products; in the Body Magic is surprisingly flexible; around the abdomen, back and at the waist creating the most feminine hourglass figure.

Besides the body garments Ardyss also has the Angel bra which is great for women who have been thinking of investing in a boob job but squirms at the thought of going under a knife or a possibility of the breast exploding while on a plane ! Ardyss Angel Bra word has it that women who have had breast implants dote on the Angel Bra because of the excellent way it holds the breast in place whereby keeping it’s desired shape of the breast for a longer period.

Find below the fantastic qualities of the Angel Bra:
  • Supports and maintains good form and assists in correcting posture.
  • Molds the breasts to either equalize, increase or decrease the appearance of your breast size.
  • Helps to form the shape of the breast
  • Ideal for those involved in sports.
  • Helps alleviate premenstrual tenderness.

With all these qualities why would any woman prefer the knife? That is the question! Given that, hey it also helps alleviate premenstrual tenderness!!

By wearing any product from the range you can really look like you’ve lost 2-3 dress sizes in just a matter of minutes – 10 minutes or less, to be exact! The results are amazing!

Ardyss goes a little bit further by introducing nutritional products that work in conjunction with the reshaper ,the Levive juice that is high in antioxidants. It holds five of the world’s top five superfruit: Pomegranate, Acai Berry, Mangosteen, Gogi, and Noni into one product.

“The combination of these superfruit juices leverages their synergic action in your body to the fullest, slowing your body’s cells’ aging process while helping to support good health,” Le´Vive is a vital component of Ardyss International’s Body Magic 2 Step System.

While Body Magic shaping garments can change outward appearances, Le´Vive helps transform the inside of the body. “At Ardyss, we believe that we can reshape the outside and revive the inside,” Díaz de León one of the co-founders says.

Sade Popoola who is a personal stylist, makeup artist, independent distributor and user of this fabulous product says this product has transformed her life and the numerous people she has introduced the product to, especially those who for some reason or the other do not like exercising or can’t and won't think of going under the knife ,but adds that on the other hand if you are an exercising bunny you have the upper hand in benefiting from a great transformation.

She opened the World Cup 2010 with Alicia Keys and Shakira, but certainly drew the most attention in the style stakes. Check out the scary talons and skimpy leotard – that’s one brave woman!

Fantastic performance though... come on ENGLAND! x

St Martins graduate Osman Yousefzada is definitely one to watch. His autumn/winter 10/11 collection is guaranteed to be a head-turner with its fusion of fur, leather and embellishments. It’s clear that the Osman wearer dares to be noticed with the oversized drapes and exaggerated textures that feature heavily in the collection.

Taking inspiration from powerful female figures, his designs offer an elegant yet striking approach to tailoring. While the draped fabrics create a relaxed vision of autumn/winter 10/11, where women can sit back and let their clothes do the talking.

I can’t say I’ve had many haircuts where I haven’t tied my hair back upon leaving the salon. In fact, I tend to put off my next haircut for as long as possible. My unruly, coarse hair proves to be a challenge not only for my day-to-day styling and care routine, but also for hairdressers. That is why I took the opportunity to pay a visit to the Errol Douglas Salon in London.

You may remember my recent article on the legend in the hair industry, Errol Douglas. With his remarkable level of experience, I decided to put myself in his very capable hands and requested a drastic image change.

When I arrived at the salon I was welcomed by beautiful, clean cut decor and friendly staff. Errol came over to have a quick chat and get to know my style and hair type. A few key words were thrown around, such as ‘angular’ and ‘asymmetric’ which assured me that he had a good idea of what cut would suit me. After a lovely chat, a little head massage and a hair wash, I sat down for my moisture intensive treatment. Soaked in a thick conditioner, my hair was wrapped up and placed under some heat. This opens your hair cuticles and helps with the absorption of the product. With hair as dry and damaged as my own, Errol said he needed to replace some moisture before cutting. Why hadn’t I had this before by any other hairdresser? My hair was softer than I ever knew it could be!

I spoke to Errol about the ethos behind his salon. He wants everyone, regardless of their hair type, to feel as if they can walk into the Salon and get the same service. All of his team are taught about different textures and demonstrate an in-depth understanding. They also pride themselves on blow drying, which would explain the constant hum of hairdryers that surrounded me. It’s a shame, but the reality is that not every salon can offer a good blow dry and opt for the ghd’s.

It felt like no time at all until most of my hair was on the floor. Errol manipulated my frizz-prone hair into controlled curls and voilà! Despite the fact I’d not had short hair since I was about five years old, I seemed to fit straight in to my new reflection. It looked like me, just a better me. My square shaped face and strong features appear softer, I look taller and most of all I love it! His talent in coming up with the latest trend reflected in my cut, fitting in perfectly with hair trends for 2010 whilst adding a new direction for individuality.

The Errol Douglas Salon really does cater for all things hair and beauty. Top international makeup artist, Ariane Poole, works at the salon providing makeup lessons, bridal makeup consultations, touch ups and any of your makeup needs. However if you’re simply looking for a spot of indulgence to unwind, their sanctuary is for you.

Errol has teamed up with Matrix Biolage and developed seven unique treatment programmes to completely indulge you and your hair. The therapeutic approach to salon solutions puts the spring in your step and the bounce in your hair.

For more information and prices go to - www.erroldouglas.com. For appointments - 020 7235 0110 Address: Errol Douglas Limited 18 Motcomb Street, Knightsbridge, London SW1X 8LB.

Errol has been nominated for Celebrity Hairdresser of the Year. If you feel he deserves this title as much as I do, you can vote for him at - www.loveyourhair.com/celebrity-hairdresser-year-2010

The research by Kellogg's has revealed that over 20% of women in the UK say they would kiss goodbye to their sex lives before their chocolate fix and over a quarter would give up their chardonnay and Chanel.

In fact according to the report it seems women have a one track mind for chocolate as 30% confessed they thought about their treat most during the day, compared to just 18% who said they think about sex.

A bad day at work is the main reason women turn to chocolate for comfort with over half of all women admitting this is when they indulge the most, while a third do so after an argument with their partner.

Women also use chocolate as a reward with 41% saying they treat themselves after eating healthily including healthy snacks all day and 20% after exercising. This could start with a healthy breakfast at the beginning of the day and feeling the chocolate has been earned by the end.

40% of women even said that chocolate is the only thing that cheers them up.

What do you think?

How is it that some girls look fabulous throughout the mayhem of festival season? Flawless in a field is not an easy look to perfect, so we caught up with our pals, the creative talent behind iconic women’s leather jackets and accessories website I Love 2 Love www.il2l.com, for their failsafe style tips on working a glamorous festival look.

Get the basics right

Let’s cover the boring stuff first. You won’t feel glam if your feet are soaking and your hair is hanging in rats’ tails. So don’t forget your wellies and a hat to cover up with. This doesn’t have to mean a death knell to fashion though – get your hands on some lovely Hunter style Wellington boots and pack a couple of hats to co-ordinate with the rest of your outfit. Oh, and don’t forget to pack your suncream – burned bits are never attractive.

Keep it simple

The basis of your festival look should be simple, wearable shapes and colours – your unique style can be added with hot accessories. Shorts are everywhere this season, and teaming these with your big boots means classic festival chic, a la legendary Kate Moss.

Layer up

Add interest to your outfit, with layers of silky knit jumpers or cardies with extra long arms. Top with a scrumptious leather jacket, that’s a bit rock chick and a bit hippie biker girl. We love this IL2L asymmetric biker jacket, which is funky but wearable. Freshen up the perennially popular boho vibe with a gorgeous scarf like this V. Fraas crinkle look piece, which is the easy way to carefree style. Or experiment with wearing it as a bandana for an ‘I live for festivals’ look.

Relaxed, statement bags

Tote your bits and pieces around in an unstructured, casual bag. Kipling has a great range of summer lovin’ looks that are as stylish as they are practical. I Love 2 Love has handpicked the very best of the Kipling collection and this cross-body white fabric bag is bang on trend with its sporty look and will have you soaring in the festival style stakes.

Headwear:

Fresh from the catwalks, these tall hats and headpieces from John Rocha are bound to get you noticed. Bold headwear was a prominent feature in Rocha’s A/W collection this year. It may not be for everyone, but for those of you that are rarely seen without a hat in the colder months - go for something different and think HEIGHT!

Footwear:

Chunky soles are here to stay and these ones are far from frumpy! Rising British designer Osman Yousefzada plans to brighten up the autumn/winter season with these jewel-encrusted platforms. Embellished footwear is a great way to brighten up any simple ensemble to create an instantly chic outfit. John Rocha continues his focus on textures with these furry platforms. The clog-like style proves that summer’s hottest shoe trend is carrying through to winter too!

Bags:

Looking at Osman’s autumn/winter collection, it is clear that he is all about making a statement. This oversized envelope clutch makes an impact in a big way – literally! The hot pink colour is a great contrast to the grey and black colour palettes that emerge during the winter months. The size is also the perfect solution for those of us that haven’t quite mastered the concept of travelling light!

Let’s face it, we’re all looking forward to a proper summer ahead (none of this intermittent sunshine!) and in the meantime we’re frantically toning up what we’ve got, in preparation. Having worked ever so hard to achieve our perfect beach bodies the next mission is to find one or two fabulously flattering bikinis or a piece of swimwear that makes us feel like a million dollars- although, easier said than done I hear you mutter!

Regardless of where you’ll spend time holidaying (although we’d like to think somewhere in the Caribbean or St. Tropez even) this year, there’s nothing like being seen in luxury designer swimwear to ensure you ooze pool or beach side glamour.

Our two most beloved celebs from TV show Strictly Come Dancing definitely have it sussed this summer, as they have collaborated with Sandstorm Boutique, an online outlet selling beautiful designer swimwear, beachwear and accessories. Yes, Vincent Simone & Flavia Cacace have put together a collection of their favourite designs that reflect their own personal style. Having previously worked with Flavia I would like to recommend these gorgeous pieces for your summer wardrobe- take inspiration now!

I love fashion shows and everything about them, especially taking part and experiencing the excitement, the pure chaos and that sense of pride when it’s all over. Months and months of hard work culminate in a show that lasts just one hour, but the girls at the Southampton Solent fashion show proved that this dedication is all worthwhile, with a varied and imaginative display that could easily have been a part of London Fashion Week. The whole show was a spectacle being shown in a docking warehouse and with everyone displaying some amazing exhibits it was bound to be a success, especially due to the two collections that really stood out for me, designed by Bond Morgan and Kirsty Walkinshaw.

Bond Morgan’s collection was bold, colourful and inspired and, using all fair trade, organic fabrics, she has come up with a genius collection, telling me her idea was “buy less, wear more". She explained this is because you can wear one outfit in so many different ways that it becomes three, four or five outfits. Take this dress for example - you are able to unzip each layer from the bottom of the dress and from the sleeves to create different lengths, various sleeve patterns and ultimately different costumes.

Kirsty Walkinshaw’s designs demonstrate that you don’t need to use lots of colour to make your creations stand out. One of the most difficult demands of styling is to use only one colour and create attention grabbing designs, but Kirsty has done just this using only black and then focusing more on shape and structure to ensure every piece is eye catching and interesting to look at. Through matching headwear and flowing designs she has done a great job in making this collection unique.

Let's not forget about the make-up designers as, after all, what is a fashion show without creative make up?

Make-up artists Gemma Laverick and Hayley Giffins deserve a mention as they generated some great artistic ideas to compliment and complete the overall styles.

Both of these make-up artists, together with the two designers, have bright futures ahead of them and we wish them all the best of luck.

Crazy Colours

Crazy, unnatural coloured hair is the key to being on trend this year. Think grey, bubblegum pink, peacock blue, neon red and turquoise. The counter-intuitive grey hair trend started emerging on the streets and runways last year.

Spring/summer 2010 collections showed icy grey streaks on pale ash blonde at Christian Dior and Chanel.

Autumn/winter collections display grey hair everywhere, from airbrushed roots and tips to all-over colour. Kate Moss confirms this trend by rocking grey streaks at her recent launch party. With the fashion industry being so hooked on youth, I think it’s quit refreshing to see grey hair being embraced! Pink and lilac-toned streaks are a great addition to grey or ash blonde hair.

Variations of baby punks and lavenders are a cool, grungey but feminine way to embrace colour in summer.

Stars such as Katy Perry and Ashley Olsen have chosen more fluorescent blue and green hues. Being a slightly harsher tone than pink and lilac, turquoise and deep denim blue works great in accenting darker hair.

Lady Gaga has set the trend for lemon yellow hair, with her ambitious sunny flaxen shade seen at the Fontainebleau in Miami. Orange-toned or neon bright reds have come strongly through this year, following the apricot hair trend from last year. This can also been seen with subtle strawberry hues added to blonde hair, especially around the face to soften the facial features.

Nice and Natural

Blonde is back in a big way. Instead of the recent peroxide fashions, warm honey-blonde or caramel shades compliment the very natural makeup that is so on trend for this year. If you’re a dark haired beauty, set the mood with a simple, single-colour approach to brunette.

Embrace your dark tones to go with the gothic beauty that is increasingly fashionable at the moment. Whichever colour you’re going for this year, consider ombré toned colour a la Drew Barrymore or Rachel Bilson. Rocker roots or dip-dyed tips have been favoured by celebrities and models alike.

The boundaries have been pushed, with the buns placed directly on the top of the head, or to the side. Varieties of textures are created to achieve that slightly messy, sexy look. You can add instant volume by using a fine tooth comb or brush to back-comb sections, and coating in a mist of hairspray. Use plenty of kirby grips to secure the sections of hair at random around a ponytail, tousling loose strands as you go. A perfect trend for summer.

Plaits have to be the biggest trend for 2010. Catwalks have seen plaited hair in all different shapes and sizes, whether sleek and tight worn like hair architecture, or matte and roughly textured, worn over the shoulder. Be creative with your braiding, going for a full-head of plaits or subtle, feminine patterns to frame the face. Whatever your taste or hair type, anyone can join the braid parade.

2010 is all about textured hair, the more the better! Another great technique for adding texture is crimping. Ruffle your crimped hair for added volume, and sculpt the top section into an exaggerated beehive. Tame flyaway strands with hairspray, or leave them loose for casual wear.

Headscarves are bigger now than they were last year, used to add colour and pattern into any hair style. Wear double, narrow head bands at the front of the hairline or wide head bands low across the forehead. Create knots and bows to tie in with the 2010 trends, or wrap round your updos to tame holiday hair. Alternatively, add a separate bow to be completely on trend this year. You can even add a hair bow a la Lady Gaga.

Long and Luxe

We are going back to the 70’s with long hair styles, offering a romantic vibe that is innocently sexy. A centre parting being key to this look, with a small amount of product to tame the hair, leaving it to flow as natural. This is the equivalent of the ‘no makeup’ makeup look. Tousled, matted waves form the quintessential California look, so get the tongs at the ready.

Celebrities such as Cheryl Cole and Blake Lively love this look with a side parting, with the hair brought round to fall over one shoulder. This screams elegance and sophistication, for the ultimate classy evening wear.

Deep set, well defined partings have been seen all over the catwalk this year, with short or long hair, tied up or loose. If you don’t like a parting, how about slicking your hair back tight to the head, securing it in place with plenty of hairspray and leaving the rest loose? Wife of Will Smith, Jada Pinkett opted for this catwalk-inspired hairstyle to really bring out her facial features, she looked gorgeous! Festival go’ers are also sporting this look, as it is easy to create with even the dirtiest of hair. This wet looks brings a really modern, androgynous feel.

Fringes and frolics

A blunt cut fringe is a quick and easy way to update any hair cut and varying the length of the fringe can totally change the whole look. Celebrities such as Katy Perry and Beyonce have sported a rounded, short cut fringe, going for that Bettie Page pin-up style.

You must have noticed the half shaved hair cuts that are so surprisingly sexy. Amelle from Mystique, Rihanna and Cassie all pull off this look beautifully. However if like me you don’t have the guts to get the clippers to your hair, how about achieving the faux-shaved look by tightly braiding or twisting small sections close to the scalp?

2010 has seen hair styling revert back to relaxed, low key styles for those effortlessly chic looks and oversized, frizzed out updos to contrast.

Really love your blog, here is a swedish designer i think you would like www.camillawellton.com

I wanted to ask Shini how it all got started and how she captivates her audience.

She says; "It all started at the end of 2008. I was following a bunch of fashion blogs, at which point I realised that a lot of the beautiful accessories and clothes that were being posted were probably quite easily DIY-able. So that's when I opened a blog dedicated to DIY tutorials and my style. I was always interested in style, but I might say that the blog was my proper entry into the fashion world".

"I always hope that my readers can take something each time they visit. Whether it be inspiration for their own styling, DIY tutorials or even just a mood uplift. So I focus on keeping the mood of my blog lighthearted and easygoing".

Shini certainly manages to achieve this as her blog is fun, inspiring and exciting to read. If you want to be inspired this is one must-read blog you should access.

Check out the site here - www.parkandcube.com

Her key themes are always fashion designers, fashion stories, (magazines), or fashion photography, with the occasional reference to her own experience.

She has nurtured her blog for over a year and uses it as a platform to close the division between writing and fashion.

She says, “ I’m hoping to find my own convincing prose style and individual voice while focusing on subjects I love. In my notes I only cover people and topics I’m interested in and carefully select what I like from an inexhaustible fashion repertoire. I think it is important to stay honest and loyal to my individual taste rather than wrestle with perhaps more popular ideas in a hugely competitive blogosphere. I was craving a stage to discuss and articulate fashion ideas while remaining authentic and true to my passion.”

She aimed to write about fashion in a different kind of language, and we think she has managed to do just that. The challenge was to engage with her audience and share her personal fashion perspectives through texts.

She says, “ It is hard to navigate the fashion world using words more than imagery to convey an idea but I think that I might achieve this one day. This concept is also the distinguishing feature of my blog and what makes it so different from other fashion websites. It’s not necessarily a strategy that has worked in my favour and proved effective in terms of increasing readership numbers but I’ve gained a loyal following of wonderful people and fashion professionals who enjoy reading and fashion as much as I do.”

JaJa was a finalist in the Dazed & Confused fashion digital award competition, which was also a huge professional achievement. She was also featured on the Sportmax Code W.O.W. website, and Dolce & Gabbana's online magazine SWIDE.

So if these are not reasons alone for July Stars to be one of our top 5 blogs then I don’t know what is. Check it out for yourselves. Trust us, it's worth it!

So start that savings fund now to ensure you have the cash to buy camel because, if your closet isn’t awash with this colour, you are not on trend. Many designers are dressing their models in it head to toe, but I think a statement piece can be just as effective.

Why not try a pair of camel toned chinos with a v neck knitted jumper in any colour of your choice, some chunky jewellery, and a pair of ankle boots for an effortlessly chic day time look. Switch the jumper for a strappy top and the boots for some heels, and you have yourself a night time outfit that would make any fashionista envious.

What ever images the word "embroidery" conjures up in your mind's eye, you will be definitely be changing your opinion after seeing the Prada, Paul Smith and Luis Vuitton shows. Beautiful knits with stunning patterns and textures were everywhere in the AW10 shows.

Embroidery is so adaptable that it can be worn with practically anything, including skirts, tops, jumper’s, dresses etc. Our favourite for this year, however, has to be this Juicy Couture T-shirt below, which can either be worn tucked into a high waist skirt or worn with a pair of jeans and sandals for a laid back, trendy look.

They are frequently worn in the hair or in accessories like jewellery, but for practical reasons have not often been used in clothing. For this A/W10, however, feathers are as big as fur and, if you are able to mix and match the two together, then that’s even better.

If you don’t believe in using real fur, then make sure you fake it because this trend is way too big to miss out on. Wear a warm brown fur coat over any outfit for a cool casual look and, for instant glamour when the evening comes, team your fur with a beautiful feather dress, like this head-turning Lipsy dress.

Thankfully, help is at hand (no pun intended!) with Tanya Grach’s Top Tips for keeping your digits and toes in prime condition all summer long.

  1. If booking a Chiropodist Pedicure, make sure you book your appointment for a week prior to your holiday, this will give your feet time to recover, making walking on hot sand more bearable!
  2. Give your cuticles a weekly massage with a cuticle oil, this will keep them hydrated and is excellent for the nail plate
  3. Give your nails a weekly buff to gently remove any ridges, leaving them healthy, shiny and smooth. This will also help when applying polish
  4. Where possible apply a sticky base coat, not only will this shield your nail from the polish it will also help the longevity of your varnish
  5. A French Manicure is always a good choice for the summer as it will go with any outfit making it the most versatile choice
  6. If you have a summer wedding or special occasion, pick a varnish that is hinted in your outfit, if patterned, or a colour that will compliment the look
  7. If going for different colours on your fingers and toes, try to choose colours from the same palette, using the lighter shade on your finger tips
  8. Be sure not to apply too much polish as it will take longer to dry (especially in the heat) and is more prone to chipping and peeling away
  9. Always apply a non-yellowing Top Coat, this will help with colour fade and changes to the varnish you have chosen – a real must in the heat!
  10. When removing varnish, use a cotton pad soaked in non-acetone remover, hold over the nail for a few seconds then gently wipe off

The best way to maintain healthy nails is to have regular manicures and pedicures as these will greatly increase nail growth whilst keeping them shiny and smooth.

They keep me warm, something I need to be on a daily basis and can look incredibly stylish when worn with the right outfit of course! I must admit I have been wearing my Alexander McQueen scarf a little too much, which seems to just compliment everything I own but somehow I’m getting a wee bit bored of it now.

As a stylist I’m always discovering new upcoming designers and just last week I was introduced to Mia Jafari London, a new label specialising in luxury hand-finished, limited edition silk scarves. I just couldn’t wait to check out the collection for myself. This season sees the Central St Martins and Goldsmiths graduate Mia Jafari, a British-Iranian London-based artist launch her debut scarf collection, ‘Ladybirds (heart) Strawberry Cosmos’ with absolute conviction. The collection of 9 scarves exudes a stunningly vibrant jewel-like luxurious feel and introduces you to a dazzling world where majestic creatures such as gem-encrusted birds along with enchanted trees dripping with strawberry pink muffins form the backdrop to captivating Eastern landscapes.

The collection features two different styles; a handkerchief shape or a long style, which gives two versatile options for anyone to wear and with witty names like Berrypolitan and Midnight Mojito they are must-have for any city girls wardrobe. My favourites are the Hurricane and Berrypolitan scarves without a shadow of a doubt and since I purchased them I literally haven’t stopped wearing them – these have definitely become my new summer additions.

As well as her scarf collection Mia is also working on a showpiece dress collection that will come out in June. It's a collection of simple dresses that fuse the prints from the scarf collection with actual embroidery and embellishment. Exclusively I’m extremely thrilled to show you some of her amazing work in progress, see some designs of her new dresses  – utterly gorgeous:

  • What does your lipstick say about you?
What does your lipstick say about you?

Next time you’re out with the girls or having a dull day in the office, gather your girls’ lippies and take a look at the shape of the used lipsticks.

1. Slanted tip, close to original shape - You are careful and keep reserved, avoiding too much attention. Although you do go for a new hair colour or outfit now and then to boost your self confidence. You thrive on schedules and usually abide by the rules.

2. Rounded tip to a point - The sharper the point, the more ambitious you are. You’re get up and go attitude means you are loveable by all, especially the family as they are the pride of your life. You’re known to exaggerate and can sometimes be stubborn over little things. But you’re loveable nature ensures you are never alone, which is good for you as you thrive on having others around.

3. Rounded, smooth tip - People love your easy-going and even tempered nature. You are usually always happy, and seem to be the peacemaker with your friend’s problems. You like to brighten people’s day with a splash of generosity.

4. Flat top - You’re always one to rise to a challenge, with your quick thinking and to-the-point nature. Friends know they can rely on you, as you always stick to your high morals. You tend to be careful with your appearance.

5. Sharp, angled tip - Routine is boring for you, you’re much too high spirited to work to schedules. You’re loud and outgoing, but sometimes your highly opinionated views gets you into arguments. You’re also very selective of your friends.

6. Flat top, concave - Your complex and inquisitive nature would make you a great detective. Making friends is never an issue for you, as you lead such an adventurous and exciting life.

7. Sharp, angled, but curved tip - Attention is always on you, which you love, as you’re talkative, enthusiastic and energetic. You think with your heart, which feeds your creative flair, but also means you tend to fall in love easily.

8. Sharp angles on both sides - You love life and are very spiritual, yet you hold a sense of mystery. Your curiosity finds you seeking attention, with little or no issues of self-confidence holding you back.

You can also read into a person’s character and mood through the colour of their lipstick, although that’s a little less surprising. There is so much general meaning behind colours, whether it’s on your bedroom wall or your dinner plate. But remember to choose your lipstick according to your skin tone and eye colour, not just your personality. Finding the perfect, complimentary shade can contribute to making your skin appear more radiant, eyes appear brighter and even flatter your body shape and facial structure!

Red - The most popular lipstick choice, and there’s a shade to suit all. Demand respect with your show stopping colour! Deep, dark reds emit passion and energy, signaling a women feels sexy and sensuous. While studies have shown that brighter red pouts bring better career prospects. Depending on your skin tone, aim for a red with more bluer hues, as this will make your teeth appear whiter.

Pink - Screams femininity and youth. Pale pinks indicate you are happy and have a fulfilling sex life.

Natural - Muted shades are great for the office. It exudes professionalism, whilst keeping you looking down-to-earth and approachable. Opt for your true lip shade, or a shade darker, to even your lip tone and make you appear ‘done’ in seconds. This is the ultimate accessory for women of all ages.

It gives a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘let your lips do the talking’, don’t you think?

1. Alexander Wang style plait.

As seen on the X-Factor show, Cheryl Cole has applied extra long extensions for this particular hairstyle. This look can be also be recreated with mid-length hair, so no need to splash out on extensions.

  1. Apply texture spray to the hair in random sections and blast with a hairdryer for that slightly messy, effortlessly sexy appeal.
  2. Apply a styling cream or mousse through the mid-lengths and ends. Creating a small side parting, bring the hair over and divide it into 3 random sections. The random sections will give the plait that uneven pattern for a more laid-back appearance.
  3. Plait down, continuing the plait to the ends and secure by knotting. If your hair is too silky to stay in place with few knots, you can use a thin elastic hair band.
  4. To finish, give the hair that matte texture by applying a small amount of moulding paste. Warm it in the hands for even application, and tease out small strands of hair for that final messy look.
2. Cheryl Cole’s faux bob.

Cheryl wears this hairstyle, amongst many, for her most recent music video 'Parachute'. This look works for all hair lengths, as well as being appropriate for all occasions.

  1. Part the hair to the side and curl all over, using a wide tong for large, natural waves.
  2. Split the hair into four sections (right, left, top and bottom) and tightly plait the bottom section at the back. Wind the plait into a bun close to the scalp. If you have shorter hair you can twist it into a ballerina bun. This will be concealed by the bob, so don’t worry about being too neat.
  3. Backcomb the bottom of the top section with a fine-tooth comb. This will add volume to the hair for that textured lift.
  4. Twist the smaller side section round to the back, and secure it to the bun underneath.
  5. Take the larger side section and top section (which you have backcombed) and create one plait, working from the middle down. Twist the plait to the side and tuck it underneath, using pins to secure it to the bun underneath. Make sure you have left a section of hair at the front. For shorter hair, you don’t need to plait it, simply tuck the hair under itself and secure it with pins.
3. Classy Updo
  1. With your hair straightened, apply a small amount of styling mousse all over for that extra fix. Use a fine-tooth comb or brush to backcomb your hair. Backcomb in sections, starting from the bottom of the back of your hair. If you have long hair, concentrate your backcombing towards the roots. If you have shorter hair, backcomb to the tip. This will give the hair volume for the shape we want to create.
  2. Work your way up to the top of the crown, making sure you spray a list mist of hairspray for each layer you backcomb to hold the volume in place. Leave a section at the top to smooth over our textured, backcombed hair. This section should be large enough to cover the whole updo, without having any of the hair underneath showing through.
  3. Take the backcombed section and tuck the ends under at the nape of the crown, securing in place with kirby grips or a claw grip.
  4. Use a mixture of thin headbands at the front of your hairline to tame back any strays and add decoration.
  5. Smooth the remaining top section of you hair over your updo, using a wide-tooth comb to smooth out any gaps. Add a few extra kirby grips to secure in place at the nape of the neck, with the rest of the hair.
4. Voluptuous curls.

Cheryl styled this look using extensions to help give it more body, however this look also works without hair extensions. If you are using hair extensions, choose real hair, as they can withstand the heat of the curling tongs.

  1. With dry hair, prepare the hair with a curling or smoothing cream that also protects your hair from the heat. Make a side parting and split the hair into sections (left, right, back and top) to make it easier to manage.
  2. Then, using a curling iron, curl small sections of the hair, leaving a couple of inches gap at the roots. Leave the tongs on for about 10 seconds. Go for a medium barrel curling iron if you can, as this will create more natural looking, loose curls. The trick is to twist the curl through with your finger once you have released it from the curling iron. This will help set the curl as it cools down.
  3. Do this to all of your hair, starting from the nape of the crown and working up.
  4. Use your fingers to gently separate the curls, giving them a more natural finish. Then use a hair band to loosely tie the hair about half way down.
5. Elegant Ponytail.

Again, Cheryl has used extensions for an extra long and dramatic style, but this look will look great for anyone with medium length to long hair.

  1. Making sure you have protected your hair with heat defense spray, straighten your hair until it is poker straight. - Plait small sections at random around the hairline.
  2. Take the top section of hair (leaving out the very front) and backcomb the roots, working from the bottom of the section upwards. This will give your hair the height that it needs.
  3. Leaving out the backcombed section, pull the hair tightly back into a ponytail, using a fine-tooth comb to make sure the hair is smooth to the head. Add the backcombed section into the ponytail, loosely smoothing over the top with the comb. Spray a light mist of hair spray to prevent any flyaways and if your hair is layered, you can use kirby grips to keep the short layers in place.
  4. When you are tying the ponytail, don’t pull the hair all the way through on the last tie, leaving a small loop at the back. You can use kirby grips to make sure it is extra secure. Let the hair hang down over one shoulder.
  5. Finally, use a shine spray to give it that sleek glossy finish.

Cheryl looks amazing when her hair is curly, it always looks so effortless!

Having naturally straight hair, I often struggle creating really good curls that stay in and, believe me, I've scoured the internet to find tips!

Goody Hair Care offers some really useful advice on getting curls just like Cheryl's!

I found Spanish Clara making her way down Brick Lane for a night out with the girls. She has highlights on the top so the hair softens her face as it falls. Plenty of hairspray is key to this look for volume and to prevent flyaways. If your hair doesn’t have that natural wave, use a rounded brush as you blow dry, or flick the ends with a straightener to give it that movement. I love the flick of hair she has left by her ear!

Image 2.

Sophie is a student I spotted in Liverpool Station. She has used wax to mould her hair into this style, and hairspray to fix it in place. After a blow dry to shape the style, if you need a little help with the height then you can backcomb the roots at the top of the crown of the head. She has finished off with a turquoise bow in keeping with the hair trends for 2010, which is a pretty little accessory to complete her outfit.

Image 3.

Luana has a full head of beautiful curls. Curly hair is usually naturally dry, but she uses plenty of products to de-frizz, including Sebastian Potion #7. This formula deeply nourishing your curly hair and prevents frizz, resulting in soft, shiny, bouncy ringlets.

Image 4.

Documentary producer Candy Thize has gone for this trendy, sophisticated updo. Leaving the top section, she has pulled the hair at the back and tied it tightly up, to create a highly placed mini ponytail. The top section has been backcombed at the roots for height, and smoothed over into a quiff. The side swept fringe is pinned back behind the ear and voila! A creative updo for the evening or day wear.

Image 5.

I saw Rose in Portobello Market in London. I first noticed her lovely feather hair accessory, which I had recognised from the stalls around us. As I stopped her for a closer look, I saw her stylish plaited updo. She created a fish plait on either side of her side parting and simply pinned them at the back. She describes this simple, but eye-catching hairstyle as the perfect way to “hide your bed head”.

Image 6.

Pictured in Portobello, Franky’s style is unsurprisingly inspirational, as she works as a personal stylist for Gap. She has gone for twisted dreads for her afro, accessorising with a headscarf. I love how she has supported her hair, using the width of the headscarf at the back, and tying it into a cute little bow at the front. I know I’m commenting on hair styles but I can’t resist pointing out her unique, bright blue dotted makeup. I feel a trend coming on...

Image 7.

Jo, a Yoga teacher I spotted in Canning Town, loves her dreads and so do we! She has had them for 10 years, getting the roots re-dreaded every so often. Dreadlocks require little maintenance and are so easy to style. As you can see, tying them back into a loose bun creates a completely different look.

Image 8.

Emilie rocked this very trendy, blunt cut fringe in the streets of Southampton. Unique, perhaps not, but fashionable and beautiful? I think so! She cut her fringe herself to update her haircut.

Image 9.

I also saw Michaela in Southampton. She loves her bright colours and expresses this through her bright, apricot hair. This is also a huge hair colour trend for 2010, even though the likes of Vivienne Westwood has had this as her signature colour for years.

  • Ancient Egyptian makeup
    Ancient Egyptian makeup
Egyptian Era

The first recorded forms of cosmetics traces back to the Egyptian empire, about 4000 BC. Egyptian women used kohl, made with ingredients such as burned almonds, lead and soot, to blacken their lashes and upper lid. Cleopatra even made her lipstick from crushed beetles! In fact, their cosmetic line was impressive to say the least. Can you believe that in those days they had developed natural formulas to make hair grow and get rid of scars, wrinkles and stretch marks?

The concept of enhancing natural beauty with makeup started to spread throughout the middle east, with Romans, Greeks and Arabs taking a liking to the idea. A Roman philosopher once said “A woman without paint is like food without salt” and a medical encyclopedia has been found to have described makeup as the “Medicine of Beauty”.

Victorian and Elizabethan Era

However, cosmetic practices weren’t always favoured as they spread into Europe. Church leaders in the middle ages thought it was sinful and immoral to wear makeup, being misleadingly arousing for men. This led to makeup being deemed unladylike, against common social etiquette and banished to the prostitutes. However, Queen Elizabeth | was a trend setter. Her portraits popularized the black lips look, as well as the white painted face known as ‘the Mask of Youth’. Women in the Elizabethan and Victorian era liked to be thought of as fragile, associating those with a suntan to be the vulgar working class. The paler you were, the more you could afford to not work and stay indoors. Ladies would go to great lengths to whiten their skin, including drinking vinegar and discreetly painting blue lines on the skin to increase the appearance of veins showing through.

20th Century

The salon business began. Initially, customers would sneak in the back door, not wanting others to know they needed help in looking beautiful. However, with the opening of Selfridges in the beginning of the 20th century, cosmetics were being sold on the open market and the industry was established. As the years went on, trends in different makeup looks were coming and going. The industry was flourishing into the multi-billion dollar industry it is today.

In 1998, he opened the Errol Douglas salon in London’s gorgeous Belgravia Village. Errol and his talented team offer makeup, nail and both European and Afro hair services to ensure you all can leave feeling reborn. I have arranged to make a visit to Errol Douglas so I can fill you in shortly with my personal scoop on the salon experience! Keep your eyes peeled!

What are your three miracle hair products?

Hydrating Moroccan Oil is amazing, for all hair types. Vavoom hairspray is another favourite of mine, it has a great hold and doesn’t go crispy or leave white residue in the hair. It has a very natural hold, which still allows for movement. A product I can’t live without is Messy couture moulding paste. It’s a wax which is great to apply on the ends of your hair for that disheveled look.

What's the secret to a good haircut?

The best way to ensure a good haircut is to go in and see how the hairdresser works with you and manipulates your hair. Also, it’s good to see how your hairdresser talks and consults you about different shapes and design of the haircut you want. I think magazines and pictures should be the last resort, not the first.

You have worked in a salon since the age of 11, when would you say you knew you wanted to be a hairdresser?

It’s a vocation for me, it has chosen me. I think you continuously learn, it’s an ongoing thing. Most of the people who start young just build on what they have started learning from a young age. For me, from year dot it was all about design, which goes very closely with hair and shapes etc. I’m one of five children, who are all academics. We’ve always had very supportive parents.

What changes do you foresee in hair styling?

I think the industry will only expand. People really love makeovers. All these programmes with Gok Wan etc are so successful. People go gaga over hair and makeup, hair is an extension to clothes after all, it’s fabric. I’ve seen all sorts of people doing whatever they can to keep up appearances, like using soap to fix their hair if they don’t have any products handy.

You have won countless awards, which would you say is the highest achievement and means the most to you?

My MBE. The only way I can explain it is as the most surreal, amazing experience. If you’re born in London like me, you’re brought up around Buckingham Palace, you never think you’re going to go inside it! To be invited to meet the queen is a once in a lifetime experience. It was so personal- you enter from the front, you’re going up her stairs, it’s like you’re in her bedroom!

Can you describe a particular makeover that gave you the most satisfaction?

When I cut Danni Minogue’s hair about 2 years ago. We went from long to short and she didn’t even flinch!

What is the strangest location you've ever had to cut hair?

In the toilets of an open platform train station (haha!) It was freezing! Try and picture it, a 6ft3” hairdresser in a tiny cubicle with the model sat on the toilet seat.

You have so much varied experience throughout your career, traveling around the world for shows and seminars, working with celebrities, photographic work and working in television. What would you say is your favourite aspect of your job?

I love the traveling, having new experiences all the time never knowing what’s around the corner. I’ve just come back from a show in Melbourne with over 900 people and now I’m back in the salon for a few days, then I’m off again.

What advice can you give to up and coming hairstylists?

There are those who just want to be, and there are those who work hard to achieve and get their names out there. If you really want it, you have to get out there and do as much as you can, learn as much as you can. I can only speak from my goals and experience, but go back to basics. Do your homework on periodic looks and basic styles. You go back to basics to rise from that and make sure you’re contemporary. I mean that in every aspect, for European and afro hair.

Tell me about your haircare range that you’re looking to start.

We’re in intricate stages of launching a range next year, for ethnic hair stroke Afro-Caribbean. So it would go from Asian, to mixed-heritage, to Arabic, to Brazilian to afro-Caribbean to African. It’s gonna be mega!

Celebrity you most enjoyed working with?

Pamela Anderson. She’s such an amazing, fun girl. She keeps you laughing, very real, very down-to-earth. Not a diva at all.

Tell us about your charity work?

We do a lot for Centrepoint, the homeless. We do motivation and character building days, doing their hair and makeup. I’ve been involved with that for the last 7 years. We’ve also just started off a charity with John Freida called Hair Raising, where we raise money for Great Ormand Street Children’s Hospital. I’m the spokesman for Hairdressers Against Aids, for Unicef. Yeah, we do loads and loads.

Where would you say you get your influence from to keep producing so many new and contemporary styles?

Well, it’s not even influence, it’s the love for what you do. I see myself as creating trends in hair, which keeps me going because a lot of people copy my photoshoots. I don’t mean that in a big-headed way, but we do a lot of things that influence people. That’s why I find it really important to come up with something unique. I’m always shooting and doing presentation work and shows, so if I’ve learned something or I have something on my mind, I’ll use it in my designs. It’s natural for me.

What would you say is your most influential trend that you’ve set/started?

I would say the introduction of beautiful, black hair pictures being published. It was really uncommon before, but all of our photos have been printed and published straight away. I think that was mainly because people saw that it just looked so easy and natural. I would say we are known for that, and just having great collections. I couldn’t pick one in particular because we do so many.

Have you ever made a big mistake while cutting someone's hair?

Yeah of course I have. I cut somebody’s blouse, and it was worth about three and a half grand! And I cut it clean, not just a nick. I was cutting the baseline when I cut about a good inch and a half line in this silk, Balenciaga blouse. I went white! I did admit it straight away, she said she was fine about it, but I knew she wasn’t. It was a lot of money, a lot of money.

Who does your hair?

A couple of my junior team. A guy called Joel and another guy called Scott. If I can’t get one, I’ve got the other.

If you had chosen another profession, what would it have been?

A surgeon. I like the title of Mister. Surgeons don’t interact with their patients, unlike hairdressers with their clients, so I’d be the first surgeon to interact with their patient. I want to learn about them and their life. Doctors are quite clinical and scientific, so I would love to really talk and console my patients, be more hands on.

What’s your favourite non-hair related thing to do?

Interior design. I like to do up houses. I cook too, I love cooking. I love coming up with new recipes and experimenting with shapes and colours, or using ingredients you’d never imagine.

Hair tips and trends for the summer?

That undercut, asymmetrical, androgynous style which looks shorn and almost as if it’s over-combed. It’s blunt on one side, with the hair taken over to the other. Keep the cut choppy, with a definite long fringe. Layer the hair in so it looks as if the back is going inwards. Make sure there’s real heaviness on the top so you can wear your fringe blunt, or tuck it into your hair for a sexy fringe. That’s gonna be a huge trend. With long hair, there’s the clump, blunt fringes with very static, jarred layers on the side. The bottom is also cut blunt, but with a bevelled shape to soften the look.

Hair tips and trends for Autumn/Winter 2010?

Well we’ve been through the grunge phase, what I think is going to make a comeback is this kind of psychedelic, shaggy, really choppy, movement hair. The colours will be emphasised for shine and vibrancy.

Worst hair trend?

You know when women with short hair put their hair in a pony tail on the top of the head? I think that looks a porcupine, awful. Or that Russell Brand look, although he’s become more casual now that he’s in love with Katy Perry. He looks much better now! Also when people over-moose their curly hair! Yuck. Crispy hair is not good!

Most influential celebrities with hair?

Not globally, but within Britain, I’d say the person who is always being copied is Posh. You have a lot of people asking for the different variations of the shapes she has. Also Cheryl Cole, her influence is unbelievable. As well as Kate Moss.

Thank you Errol, it was a pleasure to interview such a highly achieved, yet down-to-earth individual.

  • How to make a good impression
How to make a good impression

This can be a nerve-wracking time for any new employee. Not only have you got the stress of settling in with new people, new work and new surroundings but you feel you have to out- perform everyone to make a good impression.

There are however a few important rules you can follow to ensure your first 90 days work well for you and leave a long and lasting good impression which is bound to work in your favour.

Know and Be-Known

It is your job to be as friendly as possible to all the new people you meet. Share a bit about yourself (never brag) and be sure that you find out from your colleagues what the do’s and don’ts are, how the culture works and any useful insider knowledge.

Network Nous

Get out of your departments and use your networking skills to establishment key contacts in other areas of the organization. Try to draw out their priorities and challenges. Be in the know. Have lunch with colleagues in the cafeteria.

No-Go Gossip

Avoid office politics and gossip. Many long term employees may have ancient resentments, conflicts and issues with other members of staff. Avoid getting drawn in to intrigues that could back-fire on you.

Mark Your Wins

Keep a note of all your successes, achievements and all the tasks you are proud of so that you have a log that you can call upon when you have your review.

Create coalitions

Find out who can help you, who is important to know, gain advocates and connect with people who will support you and get them onside.

Stay Balanced

In times of stress and transition it is possible to make bad judgments and you can lose perspective. Try to keep balanced and see the bigger view. If need be chat things over with an ally.

Get Noticed

Volunteer, socialize, network, have strategic lunches but the most important thing is be seen and get noticed. When it comes to assessing your time there be sure the decision makers know you and what you’ve achieved.

Maintain energy

It’s so easy to slide into a rut after a few weeks. Remember it’s not a done deal until the end of your probation period so maintain your enthusiasm, be punctual, dress well, look fresh (keep a toothbrush/mints/spare tights in your drawer) keep socializing and keep focused. No daydreaming or doodling.

Don’t Wing It

Be very clear what your role is and isn’t and be sure to define with your manager precisely what is expected of you. Don’t double guess, you could go off on the wrong tangent or worst still – step on toes.

Listen and Learn

Don’t question the culture or try to change it but do ask those who appear to be successful and who may have the boss’s ear how they work and what their values are. Our ears never get us into trouble. Read the company’s annual report and take notes.

Be Inspired

Take a notebook around with you – write down your idea and observations – it will make you look keen.

Button it

Look for solutions and not problems and resist complaining. New employers don’t want to inherit a whinger or a trouble maker.

Be fun

Be helpful and nice to be around. You’d be surprised how far a winning smile and eager personality can take you

Complexion

Healthy skin is the foundation (no pun intended!) of all flawless makeup looks. Create a harmony of colour by sticking to a monochromatic palette. Warm colours compliment winter faces beautifully, so go for tawny apricots, rusty browns or honey beiges to give you a wash of colour. For the paler skins, opt for a coral complexion, which will brighten your skin tone and give you the flushed, fresh faced look.

Less really is more when it comes to the makeup for your skin. If you dare to go bare, enhance your natural features with highlights bouncing off the nose, cheeks and forehead. Rather than a shimmer, get that youthful, dewy glow with a clear gloss shine or luminous creams.

Lips

Retro red lips is a timeless, classic look, that always makes it onto the runway. To add a modern twist, why not explore with different textures? Lip stains are great for long lasting and smudge proof pouts. They are practical too, as you can team up your blush and lippy with one product. Gloss comes in so many different textures, from highly pigmented to sheer and moisturising, but adding a clear gloss to a lip stain ensures the kissability factor. Velvety, matte finishes can be drying and therefore hard to wear, but done correctly, they are extra eye-catching and luxurious. Alternatively, go for glitter. Make your lips appear fuller by dusting some red glitter onto the centre of your bottom lip. This striking highlight is perfect for nights out and guaranteed to turn heads.

Red is not the only statement colour for the lips this winter. Black is the new black and a vampy pout is undeniably the biggest new trend. While eyes are getting softer, lips are getting more dramatic, with dark berry colours. Go for velvety, sheer and glossy textures to keep this look sexy and elegant. Start by lining your lips carefully and creating a black base, then layer deep red or purple gloss over the top. For day wear, choose a rich aubergine or burgundy glossy stain. You can line the lips slightly on the inside of the corners of your lips for a subtly doll like, youthful shape/edge.

Eyes

The black smokey eye is unsurprisingly still very in this season, but we have seen more variations to better suit different occasions. Go for a softer smoke with a light dusting of soot greys, or wintery browns. For a different evening look, pair a natural or nude lip with rich, autumnal shadows.

If you’re looking for a more dramatic look, layer your smokey black eye with metallic gold, bronze and burnt orange for a flame style effect. You can even add a bit of glitter for starry eyes. For those who like to use bold colours to brighten up a cloudy day, keep it minimalistic. Balance your bright coloured shadows with a natural or nude lip.

Whatever look you choose to go for this autumn/winter, stay clear of false lashes and use little to no mascara. In-your-face sexy is out, care-free chic is in.

  • Cheryl Cole Knit
    Cheryl Cole Knit

The main problem with knits is that they can often be bulky and make us look bigger than we really are but there is a solution…. the waist belt.

If you are willing to experiment with this trend then go and buy yourself a pair of knitted trousers, and a big knitted cardigan to go over the top, like this outfit from the Chloe AW10 show.

If this style is a bit too much for you then opt for a tamer look and splurge on a knitted dress, like Cheryl Cole’s, and layer it up with a cardigan.

So why not embrace it instead of running from it? There is nothing to fear now that Christopher Kane, Alexander Wang and YSL have come to the rescue with a great solution, which is to mix and match lace with much warmer leather.

If you like to flaunt what you’ve got, wear a lace top with a pair of leather look leggings and a sexy pair of boots. If you are a less daring person, who prefers the understated look, try a leather dress with some lace leggings.

Or why not try a sculpted panel leather and lace dress, just like the one on Jenifer Garner below. Either way you will manage to look hot on a cold winter’s day.

Well now we can and I know it's exciting! Right? Splurge on a ¾ length dress this winter but, if you are any thing like me and already have big hips, tone the dress down a bit by not adding too many pleats, just like the Vivienne Westwood Anglomania ¾ Dress below.

Add some flat pumps for a casual day time look and, if you are going out straight from work, simply swap them for some pretty heels and you are ready for the night ahead.

  • Hang special garments on fabric
    Hang special garments on fabric
  1. If your clothing becomes stained, always wash the stain out or wash the whole garment immediately. The longer you leave it, the harder it will be to get the stain out of the fabric.
  2. It may seem obvious but always remember to wash similar colours together. It is so easy to lose an odd sock in your white wash, so be sure to take care when dividing your colours.
  3. Try to line dry your clothing as often as possible. Not only will it save energy, it will put less strain on your clothes and will therefore extend their life.
  4. If you like that freshly tumble dried feel, put your clothes in the dryer for 5 minutes prior to hanging on the line. This will leave them feeling soft and will retain the washing powder smell.
  5. Make sure you repair any holes or tears as soon as they happen. If you leave them longer they will only get worse and you may not be able to save them.
  6. Reinforce any buttons or other fastenings before they become loose so that you don’t lose them and find yourself unable to replace them.
  7. Store any delicate items like tights or underwear in separate bags to avoid snags from your drawers or cupboards.
  8. Try to keep clothes in a clean, well ventilated area that’s free of any pests that may damage the fabric; such as moths. If you are unable to do this for all of your garments, try to do this for particularly old or special ones.
  9. Hang clothes on wooden or cloth-covered hangers as metal ones can leave rust stains or even misshape them.
  10. Try not to wear your clothes or shoes for 2 days in a row. Leave at least a day in between to give them time to breathe and restore.
  11. When washing, it is essential to find out whether you use hard or soft water in your area as this will determine the amount of detergent you will need to use. Using too much may end up damaging your clothes over time.
  12. Always fully dissolve detergent in the water before adding the garment you are hand washing. Also avoid soaking the garment and wringing it out when you have finished.
  13. Avoid washing your garments too often as this can damage the fibres. Also try to wash them at 30 degrees to prolong their life and to be more eco-friendly.
  14. Always follow the guidelines on the care label inside your garment, and don’t tumble dry any clothes that won’t be able to take it.
  15. Give clothes away if you no longer need them as this will prolong their life and allow someone else to enjoy them.

    Tamzin Outhwaite in sweet charity.

Have you ever woken up in the morning and wanted to dress totally differently, to "redesign" your image and give yourself a complete style overhaul? Well, who says you can’t?

Backstage at the Haymarket, Theatre Royal, the cast are getting ready for yet another performance of "Sweet Charity". In your mind, picture Tamzin Outhwaite, (who plays the part of Charity), having her make-up done, dressed in jeans and a vest, drinking tea and laughing with her co-stars. Then, the moment her foot steps on that stage and she is dressed in the most beautiful, elegant clothing, she turns in to a charming, vivacious and utterly elusive good-time girl that everyone falls in love with. Although she is an actress, playing a part and performing as Charity Hope Valentine, a woman who always gives her heart and her dreams to the wrong man, her clothes are crucially important to enable her to "get into" the role.

Most actors and singers say that, when they get on the stage, the easiest way to get over their nerves is to become someone else or adopt another persona. So does everyone have an alternative persona or does the clothing you wear determine the way you act? Speaking from a personal opinion, clothing definitely has the power to change my moods. If I’m out on the town in my new 5inch heels I feel confident, if I’m at home chilling out in joggers and a t-shirt I feel lazy, and if I’m in a suit dressed for an interview I feel empowered. In fact, "power dressing" was a term used to describe women who wore suits with padded shoulders during the 1980s. So why can’t I feel empowered in my joggers? I’m still me, I’m still independent, free spirited and confident, so what’s missing?

The reason is that your appearance and your emotions go hand in hand, and the way you dress becomes an integral part of your identity. It is a fact that if you don’t look good you don’t feel good and vice-versa. Many women state that wearing nice lingerie makes them feel sexy, even though the garments can't be seen so, if you do only one thing to please yourself today, wake up happy, dress happy and it will be a happy day.

I like the way that everything is co-ordinated in this outfit. There was obviously a lot of thought put into the colours involved and the subtle jewellery finishes the outfit perfectly. I love the tight jeans tucked into the ankle boots too – very Parisienne!

Image 2:

This adventurous array of colours really makes a statement. The clashing prints and fluorescent shades create an outfit that doesn’t match, but really works!
I admire the brave use of colour and I like the calming effect of the neutral jacket.

Image 3:

I love the vintage feel to this outfit with the cascading lace and the chunky knit underneath the jacket. The thick gold chain provides an edgy addition to an otherwise feminine look, while the black headband ties in with the leather jacket and boots.

Image 4:

These guys are fabulous! They obviously aren’t afraid to experiment with their style and they certainly create an impact with their daring choices. I especially love the lace body over the trousers - very Lady Gaga!

Image 5:

This outfit portrays a very Victorian style with the dress and lace-up shoes. The hat really reminds me of a bonnet and the block-coloured tights provide a contrast to the pale shades of the dress and shoes. I love the cropped fur coat and the way that it is fastened to the top too.

Image 6:

This floral playsuit makes a great start to the summer, and I like the way that the whole outfit consists of yellow and grey. The attention to colour is key to the overall look. I also love the cute ankle socks; I can see these becoming a continuous trend throughout the spring/summer season.

Image 7:

The key element to this outfit is how laid-back it is. The combination of the slouchy check shirt and denim shorts creates a very androgynous and stylish look. I also like the chunky brogues and the addition of the rucksack.

Image 8:

I love the preppy look to this outfit. The blazer and knotted scarf create a smart look that contrasts the relaxed style of the striped top and leggings. The leather driving gloves are a great addition, while the oversized, statement bag really completes the outfit.

Image 9:

This entirely black outfit is so chic. The solid colour leaves the emphasis on textures and fabrics which means that the fur jacket is the focal point. I love the oversized collar on the jacket, and the sunglasses really add to the class of this look.

Image 10:

This outfit mixes a range of neutral colours that really work well together. I love the combination of the chunky cardigan with the floral, summer dress. The lace-up boots are also a cute addition that compliment the busy patterns on the scarf and dress perfectly.

I love the fusion of 1950s housewife and schoolgirl that’s been created with this outfit. While the styles contrast each other, they really do work when put together! The jacket looks like an amazing vintage find and provides the focal point of the look.

  • Mary Greenwell
    Mary Greenwell

Having started off as one of the original celebrity makeup artists in the eighties, she has accumulated a no less than phenomenal client list over her 25 years+ in the industry. Cate Blanchett, Uma Thurman and Sienna Miller are just a few of her regular clients and good friends. Her experience doesn’t stop there; she’s in endless demand for every Vogue, and who can forget when beautiful Princess Diana glowed from within, and out, after her fabulous makeover?

Mary now offers full day (8 hours) individual makeup lessons at £1.000 each, where you can leave confident with expert knowledge in creating your own suited looks.

Makeup

Melissa Chartan (MC) - What are your three miracle beauty products?

Mary Greenwell (MG) - A good foundation, a great mascara and a great lipstick. I love Suqqu foundations and for the mascara I use Christian Dior. For the lipstick I love Tom Ford and the Coco Rouge range by Chanel.

MC - What would you say is the most important facial feature to get right when doing your makeup?

MG - It depends what you’re trying to achieve. The base of all good makeup is your skin, but spend most time on the feature which is the focal point of the look you want to create.

MC - Is there any common rule within makeup application that you don’t agree with and do differently?

MG - No. I think all rules are there to be made the most of, but it’s important to use what suits you best. I love putting on foundation with my fingers for example; I don’t necessarily believe that you have to use brushes, but then some people swear by them. It’s a sort of trial and error thing; you find what works best for you. When I’m doing my own makeup I do my eye makeup and blush with brushes, but otherwise use my fingers for everything. Using your fingers is quicker, cleaner and one less thing to carry around.

MC - When would you use a cream eye shadow and when would you use a powdered shadow?

MG - I always think powders are much easier to apply and create a look with. Cream eyeshadows are useful for a quick and easy swipe over the eyelid, but to create great looks with building layers, powders are simpler to use.

MC - For sensitive skin, how can you be sure about a product before you buy it?

MG - Test it on the side of your neck to see if you have an allergic reaction. Most people aren’t too sensitive and makeup works to a very high standard these days, because brands have to think critically about these things before it goes to market. What you will find is that people are allergic to a certain brand name or just one particular product within the brand, in which case they just don’t use them. They will only find that out by using the brand of course.

MC - What tips and techniques do you have to suit more mature skin?

MG - Your daily routine would have probably changed naturally over time to better suit you. What you don’t want is to look like you are wearing too much makeup, but after a certain age makeup will soften your face and make you look younger. Just find the right products for you through trial and error. Also, remember not to use foundation that’s too drying, keep it moist and delicious. Yet definitely use a bit of powder to avoid looking shiny. Olay or la prairie are good skin care ranges for mature skin.

Career

MC - You weren’t always on the makeup career path when you were younger?

MG -  Yes well I was a hippie (laughs). I fell into it completely by chance. First of all it (makeup artistry) didn’t exist when I started off, it was a new career.

MC - You have a lot of varied experience throughout your careers working with celebrities, teaching clients and working in fashion. What would you say is your favourite aspect of your job?

MG - You know, the more time I spend with makeup, the more I enjoy the consistency and texture it holds. When I first started this job I was loving the traveling and being with these extraordinarily talented people. Watching wonderful talent come out of a set and seeing the creative process is just extraordinary when you start off; you’re just blown away. Now, having seen so much wonderful creativity around me, I enjoy really helping people find the best look for them.

MC - You have achieved so much in your career. Any further ambitions?

MG - I think one’s ambition in life is to live happily, be successful and just generally have a gorgeous life. In regards to whether I’m going to go and make a movie on my own, no. Am I going to design the next Sistine Chapel? No (laughs). I simply want to carry on enjoying what I’m doing, being with friends and working hard.

MC - What about having your own makeup line?

MG - Ooo we don’t talk about that yet (laughs). Who knows, maybe, maybe not. I think there’s so many wonderful lines out there then maybe I would be frightened to compete but at the same time of course I would love it, it’s an open page.

MC - In what way do you think the beauty industry will change for the future?

MG - I think the beauty industry constantly changes, getting more and more fantastic textures. That’s the biggest changing factor, but colours will also become better because of the textures. The thing that most people are working towards is beauty equals youth. Beauty therapies, beauty treatments etc will help us to age more gracefully, hopefully with less invasive surgery and less invasive treatments.

MC - If you were in control of the whole beauty industry, is there anything you would change about it?

MG - People are always being told about new trends, but I think people get a little bit confused when they are told new things all the time. For me, the best thing is to deeply understand your own face, understand what suits you through trial and error, respect what you have that is great about you and stick to what you love and know. Of course everyone likes a change now and then but not this constant striving for the new, it’s a little bit unfair. Things will automatically change as I said, because the textures will get better. It’s not like you have to be changing with it. It’s the same as in the thirties, the Hollywood actresses really stuck to their looks. I feel quite bad in a way for some of the red carpet stars, who have a new look every time they go out on the red carpet. They look so beautiful but it can be a little bit too much for them. You should stick with what suits you. Yourself!

MC - Pet makeup peeve or faux pas?

MG - I don’t really have a pet peeve, I think that we’ve all read and learnt so much in the beauty magazines, that everyone is getting very good at blending well etc. If there was one, my top peeve would be wearing too much bronzer. I mean, it is a really tacky look. Especially nowadays, we know how bad the sun is for us, it’s very aging.

MC - Celebrity you most enjoyed working with and why?

MG - I have two friends in the business - Cate Blanchett and Uma Therman. But I love all the people I work with. I always feel very honoured and flattered to be with these extraordinary women. So for me that is the joy in itself, and I get very excited when I’m working with someone I’ve never worked with before.

MC - Best place abroad that you would love to go to for great beauty finds?

MG - Of course let’s go to Japan! Japanese lines are amongst the best quality in the world, they have the most incredible textures. You can’t find these amazing lines in Europe. I would imagine India is also great for wonderful throw-away things like black kohls.

MC - What’s your favourite non-beauty related thing to do?

MG - Probably being in my house in Lamu in Africa when it’s deep cold winter in England. Or being with friends in the English countryside. Clear blue skies in England on a late spring morning are just divine aren’t they?

MC - They are indeed. Who was your idol growing up if you had one?

MG - Didn’t have any. It wouldn’t have been in my upbringing or culture, I wouldn’t have been allowed to.

MC - What type of products are most worth investing in and in what area can you afford to cut costs?

MG - Invest in good skincare that suits your skin - cream products like foundations for example. Things that you can cut costs with would be throw-away things like mascaras, black eye pencils and lipsticks. A good lipstick will always show, but hey you might be going through a different colour phase.

MC - What did you do to restyle Princess Diana’s makeup look in 1997 and give her such confidence?

MG - I think what I did more than anything was get rid of that dreadful blue pencil inside her eye! (laughs) I think that’s probably the key thing that I did to her. Blue makeup with blue eyes is not a good look, it takes away from the intensity of your eye colour.

Fashion and Trends

MC - The dewy, no makeup look is in this season, but how can we keep flawless looking skin on scorching summer days?

MG - Try and wear as little makeup as possible. When I’m in the sun I don’t wear any makeup at all. Honestly, on a humid, hot summer’s day the only thing you can do is just keep checking it and touching up.

MC - Biggest beauty must have for SS10?

MG - Hmm..this is an interesting one. You know what I adore? These incredibly bright lipsticks! The bright oranges, the bright corals and the bright pinks; I would say that’s the biggest must have. I think colourful makeup have really come through this summer. It comes through every year, but this year really go for it! Strong, vibrant and almost fluorescent lip colours are just fabulous.

MC - Is it something everyone can wear?

MG - Whether you’re a coral person or a pink person you can probably still find a bright lipstick to suit you. If not you can always go for a bright lip gloss.

MC - What’s it looking like for autumn/winter?

MG - I think false eyelashes have had their day. Extreme makeup will always be on runway looks, but actually wearing no mascara at all now is pretty groovy. I think we’re going to go back a little bit, not to wearing no makeup god forbid, but we’re going to go back to more subtlety this autumn/winter. Greys, taupes and lovely browns, all the really great neutral colours that we wear so well through the autumn. Probably great red mouths too. Not necessarily red as in fuscia and box red, but really dark berries and things like that.

MC - Are there any makeup trends you are glad to see the back of?

MG - Well, I started understanding and seeing makeup for the first time when I was a child, you know when it was the 70s fabulous full-on style. As I’ve developed throughout my career and watched it develop with me, makeup has become increasingly subtle. You can still layer it on, but you have to layer it on well now. This is what people are realising more and more - you have to learn how to do your makeup, but luckily there’s so much advice out there.

Premier Beauty Workshop

MC - You must love working for premier beauty workshop.

MG - I do I love it. I love doing individual lessons, I love watching these women who come to you and learn so much in front of you. It’s absolutely magical to watch the learning process. I’m terribly bossy, as you can imagine (giggles) so it’s really fun to teach them and watch them get better throughout the day.

MC - What can your clients expect to learn from it and who do you recommend it for?

MG - I recommend it for everybody; anyone who wants to learn how to put makeup on properly. What they can expect to get from me is to learn how to bring out the best in themselves.

To have a look at how to learn the tricks of the trade from some of the best in the business, have a look at www.premierbeautyworkshop.com.

Thank you Mary, such an inspirational and kind-hearted lady.

I also have great news about footwear. Heels are getting smaller! Which means less foot problems and, more importantly, NO MORE PAIN!

Prepare to become retro; this can be done whether you are shopping, out on the town or at work. If you are going to invest in anything this winter let it be a tweed print cardigan like the one below, which is so versatile that it can be worn at any occasion, dressed up or down.

It certainly makes a chic statement, just like beyonce below. If a bigger impact is more the style you usually go for, simply team this cardigan with a full length skirt, big hair, heels like your grandmother wore, together with a bag like the queen carries. Don't forget, however, to ensure you add a bit of colour for a youthful flair.

Why the 'neutral colours'??? Are we supposed to 'disappear' when we retire? All of us will have our favourite colours (mine is red)which we had to forego when at work in favour of (yes you've guessed) neutral coloured 'career wear'. Retirement is the time to live a little!

We caught up with the stylish guys at iconic women’s leather jackets and accessories website I Love 2 Love, www.il2l.com, which is packed with the best of Kipling, Fiorelli and Ringspun handbags , for their advice on the hero handbags that will have every sartorial situation covered.

The take it anywhere bag

There aren’t many women who can live without their ‘life in a bag’ bag. A roomy, but streamlined option is great, as it’s so versatile – laid back and practical without ever looking anything but groomed. Look to leather as it’s hardwearing, smart and won’t show the bulges of the novels, make up bags, car keys, kids’ toys etc crammed into its depths. This IL2L Kipling bag is bang on trend when worn across the body:

Chic day to night bag

When you have to be a hundred different people every day, it’s vital that your wardrobe includes a versatile little number that will take you from the office to a night out. Think soft neutrals for an uber current look and structured yet soft shapes that will work with different outfits. If you’re struggling for space for office gear or shopping, tuck a nifty little ‘Magic Bag’ shopper by Tintamar into your handbag for emergencies. It can be rolled up into the handy tube that accompanies it and stowed away in your glamorous handbag until it’s needed to tote your shopping around.

For true day to night chic, try this lovely leaf bag in soft grey by Fiorelli.

Glitzy, glam bag

Feed your appetite for all things sparkly with a truly feminine and glamorous evening bag. If you don’t buy anything else, invest in a one-piece-works-with-everything, black sequin clutch. It instantly dresses up the most laid back outfit and brings some Old School Hollywood glamour into your life. We love this sleek Fiorelli clutch from I Love 2 Love.

The quality of these ethically grown “diamonds” are unbelievable, they yield a clarity of “IT” (internal flawlessness), and even have the ability to cut glass. The expertly cut “diamonds” are set in solid yellow gold, white gold and sterling silver, with beautiful up to date designs. But don’t just take my word for it, go and check them out for yourselves at www.brilliantinc.eu

I must warn you, however, that once you start buying, you might not be able to stop. I got the chance to talk to the ladies behind this BRILLIANT business…..

Sarah-Jane Gardiner (S-JG) - What makes your jewellery stand out from the crowd?

Brilliant Ladies (BL) - The quality of our simulated diamonds. It’s virtually impossible to distinguish our stones from natural diamonds so you can complement your natural diamond collection without breaking the bank.

S-JG - If you could choose anyone to wear your jewellery who would it be, and why?

BL - Gwyneth Paltrow – she loves fashion and is admired for her ethical lifestyle. Gwyneth successfully juggles a young family, a very public career and uses her profile to advocate good causes and sustainable, ethical brands.

S-JG - Can you tell us a bit about Brilliant Inc, and how the idea came about?

BL - After working for a few years we wanted to treat ourselves to some diamond earrings. However, after shopping around we realised our budget wasn’t going to go very far…! We then started to seriously research the jewellery market and we came across simulated diamonds. There are quite a few different simulants on the market, but just as natural diamonds vary in quality, simulated stones can vary considerably in terms of quality and the few UK companies that were using simulants back then weren’t offering spectacular quality.

We began thinking how amazing it would be to start up a company that really epitomised what we’d been looking for - high quality, beautiful jewellery, that didn’t require you to blow all your savings in one go! It took a number of years and lots of research and it all came together with Brilliant Inc. Our simulated diamonds yield a clarity of “IT” (internally flawless), and have the ability to cut glass - they are that durable. We select only the most perfect material to be cut, according to ideal diamond proportions. The settings themselves are also just as important to us as the stones - like placing a frame over a beautiful painting -BRILLIANTINC simulated diamonds are set to be admired.

S-JG - I can’t tell the difference between natural diamonds and your simulated diamonds could you tell us what the differences are?

BL - BRILLIANTINC uses simulated diamonds that are ethically grown in state of the art laboratories under precise conditions, using a mineral base known as zirconium oxide. We expose the stone to the same pressures that natural diamonds, so the result is a stone with a similar refractive index and hardness of 8.5 on the Moh scale, which is the same as natural sapphire (only diamonds are a perfect 10 on the scale).

S-JG - Where did you both start your careers and can you tell us a little bit about your backgrounds?

BL - We began our first business HighCare Childcare in 2003. We continue to run two daycare centres in Ireland and love the feedback we get from the kids. The pre-schooler’s often ask us how our “other job” is going! Childcare is very rewarding but also a very serious responsibility and we love the girly fun of Brilliant Inc. It really is like a dream come true when we see customers come into our stores and love our jewellery as much as we do!

S-JG - What inspires your work?

BL - We take inspiration from our travels, the different cultures we come across, and old movies; films like to Catch a Thief and even Pretty Woman! We love the glamour and sparkle that makes you feel anything can happen!

S-JG - What has been the most challenging part of the jewellery business?

BL - We specialize in beautifully made, design-led, yet affordable jewellery. We are also very conscious of our ethical credentials. You can easily get each of these elements right on their own, but getting them all right is a constant challenge.

S-JG - Can you tell us about any new pieces coming out, and the inspiration behind them?

BL - We’re very excited about our new Deco collection. It comes in a number of colour combinations and a mix of stone and gold colours. By using our bespoke service you can decide any combination you like! In the autumn we will be building on this mix; there’s been a surge in popularity in hammered gold and different gold finishes. We’re re-working variations of our classics and mixing them with new colour combinations - contrasting old luxury with a modern luxe feel.

We’re also extending our “Brilliant Stack” collection. There are a number of new pieces to add to our current range of stackable bracelets and rings; we like the idea of “easy luxury” - enabling our customers to purchase pieces that can be worn as a single, elegant piece yet will also work as part of an interchangeable collection. We’re always mixing and matching pieces to wear for both casual and more formal occasions ourselves!

S-JG - What is your favourite piece of jewellery, past or present, and why?

BL - This may sound a bit boring, but honestly, the very simple classic Brilliant Inc studs are still a favourite! I change my earrings all the time but I come back to them over and over again. They offer freedom to achieve a really classic, elegant look and you don’t have to be too precious about doing so - if you lose one it’s not the end of the world because they’re really not an expensive piece! They’re just such classics. I wear them in white gold.

S-JG - What is your design process?

BL - Dervla and I are constantly thinking about ideas, shapes, cuts, colours…it’s just part of the job I guess! So we make sure that we set aside time every month to go through all the ideas we’ve had, and we analyse whether we think these ideas are on trend, and if it’s something our customers will love. We fine tune these ideas and send through sketches to our workshop, to cost how feasible it is to turn each idea into an actual piece. Once we are agreed on scale and costings the initial mould is made and we receive the first sample. We assess the design and agree any new details – this can be very simple or very frustrating as we need all designs to be perfect! Once all the elements are in place we can begin and the master craftsmen bring our designs to life!

We have two main collections a year and introduce variations in colour and size throughout the year to keep things interesting!

S-JG - Is there another area you would like to break in to?

BL - We would really like to explore hair jewellery and love antique diamond hair clips and even tiaras for brides. Watch this space!

S-JG - What has been the highlight of your career so far?

BL - Last summer a Saudi princess visited our Sloane Square store surrounded by bodyguards. She was wearing some beautiful natural diamond jewellery - and left without buying anything. The next day she returned and to our amazement nearly bought us out of stock completely!

She had brought her natural diamond pieces and was mixing and matching them with Brilliant Inc pieces. We’re thrilled to think our designs sit proudly with some of the best designs in the world.

S-JG - Could you tell us about the favourite piece of jewellery you own?

BL - When I (Emma) was twelve years old I got my grandfather’s watch repaired for my Dad as a Father’s Day gift. While there I noticed the store was running a competition where the first person to enter the store the following Friday would win a £4000 diamond and sapphire necklace. This really caught my imagination although I was thinking of all the lovely things I could buy with £4000 – rather than just the jewellery itself! As luck would have it, I was on school holidays and happened to walk past the store the following Thursday afternoon. It struck me that if I stayed exactly where I was until the following morning the necklace would be mine! It seemed like a great adventure and I did exactly that. The following morning I was the winner!! The necklace is something I have kept over the years – I rarely wear it as the design is not really my style but the memory always makes me smile!

S-JG - What are the goals for Brilliant Inc for the future?

BL - We’re looking to open more stores, and potentially take the brand global!

S-JG - How would you describe your design style?

BL - Fairly classical. We like to take inspiration from the past and bring it up to date for modern women.

S-JG - What was the first piece you ever designed?

BL - It was quite a simple round brilliant ring with a micro set band. It was actually very similar to the Gala ring which we have in our current collection.

S-JG - If you could open a store anywhere where would it be, and why?

BL - Probably Rodeo Drive – that would be amazing!! Everyone looks to LA during red carpet season - imagine someone receiving an Oscar while sparkling in Brilliant Inc!

S-JG - Do you have any advice or tips for our readers wanting to get into the jewellery business?

BL - It’s not impossible, but you need dedication, a good work ethic and patience. Most of all love what you do and go for it!

S-JG - Brilliant Inc have been featured in many magazines including a piece on vogue.com where they call the designs flawless and say they are impossible to tell them apart with the naked eye. How have you felt about receiving such rave reviews?

BL - It‘s amazing to get such exciting editorial and to see readers’ reactions when they visit the store! It’s great to see they just can’t believe how gorgeous the simulated diamonds are and nearly always start their collection there and then!

S-JG - How did you get your big break?

BL - Ultimately it all comes down to hard work; the harder you work the luckier you get!

S-JG - What would you say is the ‘MUST HAVE’ item on the Brilliant Inc website at the moment?

BL - The new Deco ring. It’s just gorgeous. I really like the Aqua blue and white gold for summer.

Hippies during the 1960s and 70s embraced their personal style
  • Miniskirt from 1960s
    Miniskirt from 1960s

Personal style has stemmed from developments in fashion over the years. Take the 1960’s for example, where youthful styles such as miniskirts were first introduced. This drove a wedge between different generations and meant that teenagers no longer wore the same clothes as their parents. They were introduced to shops like Biba, which sold clothes that were primarily aimed at their own age group and allowed them to experience the latest fads of the period. This era also produced certain fashion groups such as the Mods, hippies and punks who influenced the types of clothes that people bought and the images they portrayed with their outfits.

The fast-paced nature of the fashion industry and the concept of disposable fashion also encourages us to be creative with our style, while the recent obsession with vintage fashion gives us the opportunity to explore different eras. A shift in the routine of having staple garments and silhouettes to represent each era has provided us with an imaginative attitude towards fashion, and has meant that it is no longer unusual to ignore trends.

Personal style is as much about our personal preferences as external factors like trends. There will always be certain styles that catch our eye, but we now have the option to incorporate these with current trends to communicate our personality and style. It’s easy to forget that we portray a strong image of ourselves through our clothes, so it’s time for us to embrace our quirks and display them to the world.

Yes I know it doesn’t sound very appealing but, when it comes to style for any season, Chanel, Burberry and Jaeger show us just how it’s done.

I know this trend sounds really scary but you don’t have to dress quite so outrageous to be a part of it.

Simply team a big knit and leggings with a pair of fur trimmed boots and you will look bang up to date in a more subtle manner. If you are a more daring person go for an oversize fur coat, a pair of jeans and some furry boots, and you will be totally in fashion and ready to face the big freeze head on.

It takes a holistic view of fashion from all angles, and is not just about snapping pictures of street style, although this is a funky and refreshing approach, but also exploring backstage at some of my favourite designer shows. These snapshots give an incredible link between the many facets of fashion in our modern society.

I wanted to find out how People in London got started, so I went direct to the source and spoke to Holly.

I started the blog for a few different reasons - I have been obsessed with street style photography since I was a teen, (Fruits was my favourite fashion book for years), I love the immediacy of a 5 minute portrait, and I also wanted an outlet for the photography I do that doesn't end up in my online portfolio.

I really like asking people I capture on the street the blog's standard question as well: "Tell me something about yourself?" They always have the most random answers to that.

But predominantly, I have an obsession with snapping everything and anything, all the time. Just doing my fashion and portrait work simply isn't enough!

  • Beyonce shows us how to work those luscious curves
Beyonce shows us how to work those luscious curves

And for those of you who are not so naturally curvy, you can fake it- and no, definitely not through drastic surgery and implants! I am talking extra fabric in all the right places with traditional attire - such as full length skirts, nipped in waist lines and pleating - to accentuate the bust and bottom areas, which can be used to enhance your own unique shape.

I can’t help but wonder why us women have tried to hide our womanly lines for so long?

Any body of any size and any age can wear this style. If you are confident and like to be spotted, why not take this elegant look to the next level by wearing a tight fitted dress in this winter's colour, orange, to really show off your figure a la Marilyn Monroe.

If low key is more for you why not try a dress that frames your bust and waist area like this Sarah jersey dress by French Connection, which is perfect, understated and bang on trend.

The majority of us, however, do not have the same budget as the Hollywood A list and cannot afford top-class designers to make our clothes. There is no need to worry, though, as I will tell you about the life cycle of a designer dress and how you can get the look for less.

It is sometimes possible to bid on Ebay for pieces that have been worn by celebrities, for example Keira Knightly put her Vera Wang dress that cost £25,000 on Ebay, and it raised over £4,000 for Oxfam. Someone enjoyed a real bargain, paying less than 20% of the original price, but this is still beyond the price range of most people! More recently, Corinne Bailey Rae donated her Marc Jacobs Dress, and raised £250, and Lily Allen sold her Luisa Beccaria ball gown and raised £500 for the Haiti earthquake appeal. These are still expensive, but more affordable for those of us without celebrity pay cheques, and it is interesting to note the life cycle of the dresses as they pass from fame on the red carpet with these artistes to relative obscurity with the lucky, new owners.

The dresses, however, leave a legacy as they inspire copy cat versions intended for the High Street that can be bought by those with High Street incomes. One of the dresses that followed this pattern is a strapless gown from the 2008 Atelier Versace collection, created with a dramatic tiered skirt going into ruffles and finished with a rose detail on the hip. It has been seen on the runway in an orange colour, in the Versace look book, and was worn by Demi Moore in a nude colour on the red carpet at the 2010 Oscars. You can also see replicas in stores and here on the Istylista website and, although the colours may be different and the hemlines shorten or lengthen, the basic blueprint remains.

So, two years on and this dress is still in demand and as popular as ever, with a style and shape that will stand the test of time.

As the great Coco Chanel once said, “Fashion fades, only style remains the same.”

I wanted to find out all about this successful stylist and what’s next on her list of "things to do".

Sarah-Jane Gardiner (S-JG) - How long have you been a fashion stylist?
Irene Agbontean (IA) - I’ve been a stylist since 2006… so just over four years.

S-JG - Where did you start your career, could you tell us a bit more about your background, and what made you become a fashion stylist?

IA - I started working at Selfridges, (Oxford St), met a lot of people who worked in the fashion industry, then worked on visuals for a while, and then went into styling.
I actually have a degree in Forensic Science. I’ve always had an interest in fashion, but because it’s such a competitive market to break into, I thought it was best to have something to fall back on if I failed.

S-JG - Tell me what an average day consists of for you?

IA - It varies from day to day at an organisation, such as ASOS. The models need to be prepped, (hair and make up), for shoots, and racking up of outfits so everything is ready for the next stage. But it’s not that simple, as I have to make sure the hair and make up are appropriate for the brand and outfit, as well as selecting the correct shoes and accessories. For an editorial piece & video shoot there’s a lot more prep work involved, running around, calling in and collecting samples, creating looks from scratch and sleepless nights – I have many of those! (laughs).

S-JG - How would you describe your own Personal style?

IA - Umm… It’s a combination of things, almost like ‘wild cat’ meets sophisticated. (laughs).

S-JG - Who is your favourite designer?

IA - Hussein Chalayan and Ashish N Soni. They are the best!

S-JG - Where is your favourite place to shop?

IA - New York has the best thrift stores on the planet. You can come out of there with an entire outfit for under $10. It’s truly amazing!!!

S-JG - How often do you go shopping for yourself?

IA - Everyday! My eyes are always on the look out for new and interesting looks, however I don’t always buy things.

S-JG - Who are some of the people you have worked with, or for?

IA - I’ve worked with Daniel Merriweather, Lethal B, Skepta, Young Nate and a few more, and I work with designs from Diesel and Reiss to LNA and Vivienne Westwood.

S-JG - You have styled celebrities such as Lethal B and Daniel Merriweather, and
now you work as a stylist for ASOS. Which do you prefer?

IA - Both. I don’t have a preference because the end result is the pretty much the same. Its just a great feeling to see your work put together like that.

S-JG - How did you break in to the industry?

IA - I was working at Selfridges, and what a great place to meet people, so I networked and worked a lot of shows and events. I also met the Fashion Editor of Complex magazine, (American lifestyle and fashion magazine), at a fashion trade show once. She interviewed me on the spot and the next month I was in New York working at Complex.

S-JG - What should no girl be without?

IA - A pair of wedges!

S-JG - What are the three key pieces of clothing you could not be without?

IA - My favourite things right now are an oversized men’s blazer, a leather jacket, a pair of ripped tights and of course a pair of wedges. Sorry that’s four things!

S-JG - Who is your fashion icon?

IA - I don’t have one particular person or fashion icon that I draw inspiration from… I’m constantly surrounded by so many designers and various different styles that it’s hard to pick just one.

S-JG - Who would be your ideal celebrity to style?

IA - The Olsen twins. They are very cool.

S-JG - What would you be doing if you were not a fashion stylist?

IA - I’d probably be in visual merchandising– I didn’t really want to go into forensics.

S-JG - What has been the highlight of your career so far?

IA - Probably moving to New York; I think it really opened up things for me. It was refreshing and enriching to be able to embrace a city like New York, that is so similar yet so different to London. I loved it.

S-JG - What trend can you not wait to come back in to fashion?

IA - Clogs. I can’t wait for these to make its mark on the fashion scene again! It’s coming soon; just keep an eye out for it.

S-JG - What trend would you not like to see make a come back?

IA - High shine leggings!

S-JG - Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

IA - It's difficult to say. I really just try to live for now and because this industry changes everyday it's hard to say, but I hope to still be in the industry.

S-JG - What has been your biggest challenge so far?

IA - I wouldn’t say a challenge as such, but it can be quite difficult trying to convince people that the look works when they have low confidence.

S-JG - Which celebrities would you call style icons?

IA - Cheryl Cole. She has come a long way from the beginning of her Girls Aloud days.

S-JG - Which city has the best style?

IA - Paris and Japan. I can’t choose.

S-JG - Some people think being a fashion stylist is glamorous. Can you tell us the pro’s and con’s of your job?

IA - The best thing about being a stylist is seeing the end result, when an image from your head comes alive and works. That’s possibly one of the best feelings. But there’s a lot of prep work involved, which is a ‘con’. People don’t realise the amount of work that goes into a shoot or video - if there is more than one scene or theme, or if an outfit is rejected or doesn’t exactly work how you planned, you need a back-up. There’s a lot to do.

S-JG - Out of all the people and fashion shoots you have styled which has been your personal favourite, and why?

IA - Oh I don’t really have any favourites; each shoot, editorial or video varied in such different ways, it’ll be too hard to choose. They were all individually wonderful.

S-JG - What fashion trend do you think will stand the test of time?

IA - Denim. Every season. You just can’t go wrong – although the shape and style may change but denim will b e forever.

S-JG - What can we find you doing when you're not busy working?

IA - Probably just hanging out with my mates or traveling. I really enjoy traveling and want to do as much of it as possible.

S-JG - And finally do you have any advice or tips for any one wanting to follow in your footsteps?

IA - Work hard and it’ll pay off – you’ll get out what you put in!
