Ask the stylist – Experimenting with colourful trends

Q: I’ve recently lost 3st and I turn 40 this year. I’ve never really put much thought into my wardrobe, but with so much to be proud of, I’d like to be braver and try some of the colourful trends that all the celebs are wearing. I don’t have a huge budget, so what key pieces would you recommend?

They were sent to me from business owners, small, large or just by individuals that I had written about and featured on my pages.

The articles written had generated such an unprecedented upswing in business the featured individuals wanted to thank me and show me their gratitude for the increase in custom and, in some cases, the follow-on interest which lead to TV and radio coverage.

Getting yourself or your business featured in the press is a guaranteed way of not only getting more sales but of raising your profile, creating a competitive edge, gaining credibility and establishing you as an expert; if not the expert. Why not become a household name?

Journalists need good stories and news. It’s what fills their pages and makes their life easier for them. Could you or your business be the Next Big Thing the media need to know about? Does the world need to know what you have to offer?

The route to developing a media profile is not a complex one but one that needs some honing and consideration before you embark on the journey. Just like anything concerned with business building the results won’t happen overnight but with persistence and tenacity you will eventually get a return on the time and investment you put in.

Here are 5 starter points to help you set your compass to magnetize the media and considerably expand your business and personal potential.

  1. Be clear about your intention – Ask yourself what you would like press coverage to give you. Is it to inform, educate, establish or introduce yourself or your products or services? What do you want people to know about what you do? What is your offer and why would people want to read about you? Would you like to establish yourself as an expert in your field?
  2. Placing your story – where and what publication would your “story” fit into? Is it ideal for the business or lifestyle pages of your daily paper? Would it be best placed in the weekend supplements, the woman’s pages or new gadgets features? Don’t rule out specialist publications and periodicals; there are thousands out there, which could give you concentrated exposure to a specific target market. Finding a suitable publication in which to place you story is essential.
  3. Do your research – each day the nationals has different themed pages – careers, health, business, beauty, women, books etc – start to find out who edits the pages you want your story to appear in. The glossies work approximately 3 months ahead to plan seasonally and again check the themed pages and research who is responsible for editing them and directly contact them by email or telephone. This way you can start to compile a data base of contacts as you go.
  4. Have a compelling story – finding a story that the journalist will be interested in is the key. What sets you apart from others in your profession? Do you have case studies or clients willing to testify to your services? Identify your USP and don’t hold back in selling it. You need to explore your offer and give it a commercial twist. For example if you are a financial consultant could it be that you help people save money, become money magnets or know how to make passive incomes? Shout it loud and proud think – what would make my story interesting to others? Are you noticing current trends that you think the press would be interested in? E.g. you’ve seen a 50% upswing in your clients booking upmarket camping holidays.
  5. Look for hooks - Using current affairs or the latest news stories as a hook is also a useful way of developing an angle. For example money-saving tips in the current economy go down well; recycling, green issues and even the seasons can all provide a relevant peg.

Be creative and helpful. Don’t make the journalist have to think how they are going to use you – show them. Develop top tips, offer free samples or invite the reporter to personally try your services. Remember too that one press release sent out randomly may not bring the results you desire. But with persistence and ingenuity you will eventually see that harnessing the power of the press can really work for you and your business.

Tall:

Embracing your height like Liv Tyler has just got easier with this exotic frock from Nanette Lepore. The high neck and floral pattern will emphasise and flatter your chest, and the nipped in waist will give shape to a tall frame. The tulip skirt will also give the illusion of curvaceous hips and show off those endless legs. Team this dress with heels for a great summer wedding outfit, or with strappy sandals for a day out in the sun.

Petite:

If you’re a smaller lady like Cheryl Cole it’s likely that you would like to add some height to your petite frame. A maxi dress like this one from Oasis can help to add inches to your height. The extended shape will lengthen your body, while the deep V neck will elongate the torso area. Maxi dresses are a chic and simple outfit for the summer and also serve as a stylish cover up on the beach.

Apple:

This wrap dress from La Dress will create instant glamour for apple shapes like Jennifer Hudson this summer. Not only will the dark chocolate shade disguise any lumps and bumps, but the deep V neck style will show off those fabulous boobs. A wrap dress is also great for defining your waist and celebrating your curves.

If your slender but carry extra weight on your middle, you’re a slight apple shape like Catherine Zeta Jones. To show off your shape this summer, try this linen dress from Laura Ashley. The distracting print and flared shape will help to disguise your stomach area, while the high neck will define your upper half to create a slimmer appearance.

Rectangle:

If you’re a classic rectangle shape like Cameron Diaz, this printed dress from Ted Baker will create those curves for you. The balloon sleeves will emphasise your shoulders and give the illusion of a slim waist, while the V neck shape and band under the bust will help to define and draw attention to your boobs.

A slight rectangle like Nicole Kidman would look amazing in this asymmetric shift dress from Lipsy. The angular neckline broadens your chest area and makes your waist appear smaller, whilst the bulky skirt exaggerates the curves of your hips.

Inverted Triangle:

Embrace your angular shape like Teri Hatcher with this 50’s-style dress from Jigsaw. The knotted style is not only bang on trend for this season, but it will also emphasise your waist to create a curvier look. The A line shape will also help to balance your shoulders and hips.

A narrower inverted triangle like Angelina Jolie should try a wrap dress like this polka dot style from La Dress. The A line skirt will create a balance between your upper and lower body, while the deep V neck will soften your angular top half. The wrap style will define your slim waist and give a curvaceous appearance.

Pear:

With a voluptuous pear shape like Beyonce Knowles, look no further than this floral dress from Paul Smith. The high neck and busy pattern will exaggerate your chest and help to balance out your upper and lower body, making it the perfect style for you this summer.

A more slender pear shape like Shakira should go for a strapless style like this Tibi number. This will draw attention to the top half of your body, while disguising your lower half with the large floral pattern. The band under the bust will also help to define your waist and give the appearance of longer legs.

Hourglass:

If you have a typical hourglass figure like Kelly Brook, you’re lucky enough to pull off most styles. However, to emphasise those curves a bit more go for V neck styles to flatter your boobs like this 40’s-style floral dress from Oasis. The fitted style will show off your slim waist and the busy print will disguise any problem areas.

If your body has a slight hourglass shape to it like Scarlett Johansson, you will look fabulous in this rose print dress from Dorothy Perkins. The scoop neck style will emphasise your boobs, and the nipped in waist will highlight the smallest part of your body to exaggerate those curves.

Twenty8Twelve Lambert Stripey Button Through Top £100

We all love Breton stripes for their effortless Parisian chic but why not be inspired by having your own take on this look, which won’t date as easily and will last you forever. This understated fine jersey top by Twenty8Twelve is super comfy and best worn with skinny jeans, platform ankle boots, and a white boyfriend blazer – easy peasy!

Olivia Rubin Gaudi Belted Strapless Dress £230.00

If you’re feeling brave and ready to bare all nude beauty is best. Light neutrals present a calming feel combined with an earthy elegance but can be challenging to pull off without confidence. But if you’re thinking it all looks a bit too laid back and easygoing wear these neutrals in structured fabrics complemented with strong accessories to create balance.

Experimental Beauty

The catwalk always offers mountains of designer inspiration to digest and the Spring/Summer 2010 collection is no different, but this season’s got a twist. Fashion is pushing to keep up with the latest Hollywood craze with films such as Twilight and 3D Avatar, embracing the realms of theatrical fantasy. Velvety white faces and blood stained lips have even crept in from last season- Alex Box, as the makeup artist for Gareth Pugh, eliminates the features and blood stains lips for a deathly look. The vampire craze can be seen throughout cosmetic collections with all shades of purple, so you can translate these looks into your own by going for a daring purple lip or splashed over your cheeks or eyes.

Smokey Brights

The signature smokey eye remains on the runways, but this time it’s taken more of a colourful turn. Designers such as Victorio & Lucchino and Pat McGrath for Dior go bolder and brighter with strong, statement colours, perfect for a summer night out! Simply choose your favorite colour from the rainbow palette for your smokey eye, using metallic or even glitter as your highlighter and team it with a dark liquid liner for definition to really make your eyes pop. And don’t be afraid to experiment further- update your new smokey eye with a ruby red pout, as long as you keep your cheeks plain. It’s all about bursting with vibrancy, so spin the colour wheel!

Super Skin

It’s time to start with the face masks because whatever looks you go for this spring and summer, beautifully bare looking skin is in! Let your natural skin tone shine through, whether you’re a lunar girl with lighter, porcelain shades or naturally warm and sun-kissed. Dewy, radiant complexions symbolise healthy skin. Don’t over powder your t-zone and be sure to add luminescent shimmer or shine- highlight your cheekbones, brow bones and inner corners of your eye. All skin tones are flattered and not to mention sculpted with illuminating products, but if you feel you want a splash of colour for a pale complexion, go for subtle pastel or natural blush.

There are 6 main face shapes; oval, round, square, oblong, heart and diamond. Read below to distinguish your face shape and find out which glasses style is best for you.

Oval:

High and sculpted cheekbones with a soft, curved jaw line that finishes in a delicate chin. If you have an oval face shape like Tina Fey, you are lucky enough to pull off most glasses styles. Try modern and geometric styles that complement your balanced proportions.

Round:

This is when the forehead, cheeks and chin form a circle shape and obscure the cheekbones from vision. Round faces like Kelly Osbourne should opt for angular frames that make the face look thinner and longer. Coloured and thick frames will exaggerate small features and create an edgier look.

Square:

Key features of this shape are the solid bone structure and square jaw line. Square shapes are also prone to wide foreheads and unnoticeable cheekbones. If you share this face shape with Nicky Hambleton-Jones, you should choose curved and narrow styles that lengthen your face. Oval and rounded frames will distract from the jaw line and minimise the appearance of angles.

Oblong:

A longer version of the square face shape that tends to include flat and unnoticeable features. An oblong face like Alicia Keys’ should aim to make their face appear shorter and wider to break up the length. Try round or deep frames with decorative temples to widen the face.

Heart:

The face is broad at the top and narrow at the bottom. A key feature can also be a pointed and prominent chin. Heart shapes like Melanie Blatt should choose
frames that are wider at the bottom and help to balance the face. Look for light colours and rimless frames that distract from the widest part of the face. Styles with rounded tops and squared bottoms will also have the same effect.

Diamond:

The top and bottom of the head are narrow, with prominent cheekbones that form the widest part of the face. If you’re a diamond shape like Sophia Loren, straight or rounded styles that are heavy on top are a great option for you. Square shaped frames will help to widen the top and bottom of your face. Styles with curves at the bottom are also effective.

In his search for the ultimate fabric, international fashion designer Ben de Lisi has recently looked beyond the usual silks, velvets and tuiles, and been inspired by Kleenex’s softest ever tissue.

I was intrigued to ask him about his insight, find out just how hard the tissue was to work with and how he got to where he is today, along with some questions I am just dying to know.

Sarah-Jane Gardiner - So Ben what was your first fashion memory?

Ben De Lisi - My first fashion memory was a camel hair coat with leather buttons, chocolate/camel coloured leggings with stirrups on the foot a little cap in camel with a leather visor. It was my Easter outfit.

S-JG- And was that the first thing you designed?

BDL- No I never designed that but I remember my mother put us in them. I had camel, Brother Michael had blue and Steven had red.

S-JG- What was the first thing you ever designed?

BDL- The first thing I ever designed was a PVC black metallic rain slicker type blouson which has creases on the shoulders. It was very 1970’s, I know it sounds perfectly awful, I guess in retrospect it was but I sold a lot of them.

S-JG- How would you describe your own personal style?

BDL- Preppy with a twist.

S-JG- How does it feel to be a role model?

BDL- (shyly) Humbling.

S-JG- Is there anything you have designed and regretted?

BDL- No I don’t have any regrets about any thing.

S-JG- If you were not an interior or fashion designer what would you be doing?

BDL- Painting and sculpturing.

S-JG- How did you feel the first time you got to show at London fashion week, and did you get that same feeling when the people you were mentoring on project catwalk got to show their designs?

BDL- I was nervous and sick to my stomach when I first went to London fashion week and took to the catwalk. London fashion week is a big fashion capital event and they are very quick to tear down their own. It was very nerve racking for me to do that and I felt very proud for the people (from project catwalk) that got to the final but I was also frightened for them as well because I knew it was a very big undertaking.

S-JG- How long does it usually take you to come up with a collection?

BDL- 3 months

S-JG- If you had the chance to dress anyone who would it be?

BDL- Julianne Moore

S-JG- If you could collaborate with anyone who would it be?

BDL- I would love to take over the Jean Muir collection.

S-JG- You have achieved so much in your career, from your home wear range and ready to wear range at Debenhams, to your bridal range and of course project catwalk. What is next on your list?

BDL- Next on my list would be a beach house some where hot so I could sculpt and paint for the rest of my days.

S-JG- Your dogs were obviously your inspiration for some of your home wear but what else inspires you?

BDL- Any thing in the 1950’s inspires me. I find 1950’s – 60’s very inspiring, I find artists like, Rothko, Kandinsky, Nicholson those kind of artists, Braque, Brancusi, and Arp - all of them. I find that whole period very inspiring.

S-JG- So you have made glamorous gowns to hospital gowns and now you are designing a dress out of Kleenex tissue. Has this been the most challenging experience for you?

BDL- Well I wouldn’t say it was the most challenging, the most challenging thing is making sure the shape of the dress is just right so it photographs from every angle perfectly. But what I would say is that it is time consuming and you have to be very, very careful and very, very delicate with it, because at the end of the day you are working with tissue which is very fine and delicate and your fingers can go right through it. So it was challenging as in the tissue was not easy to sew.

S-JG- How hard was it working with tissue, and did you have any blunders along the way?

BDL- No.

S-JG- The dress does not look like it is made out of tissue - it looks, and it fits, Lisa Snowdon like a glove. You two have been friends for years, is she easy to work with?

BDL- Lisa’s great, she’s very honest with me, she has a very womanly, aspirational body, really fabulous, I love Lisa. I had a great time working with her.

S-JG- You made this dress completely by hand. How long did it take to make?

BDL- 3 days.

S-JG- What has been your favourite garment from any of your collections and why?

BDL- It has to be a black strapless dress with gold foil print which came from the design of a rocker. I played with the design. It was a gold foil print at the bodice and around the hem and it was a very tight fitting fishtail, bias gown and Kate (Winslet) wore one of those dresses (not that particular one) from that very collection with the foil print, but not the same design. I think it was for the BAFTA awards many, many years ago. But that dress continues to be one of my all time favourites because it speaks volumes about me. Its glamorous, it’s a very simple silhouette and it makes an entrance and it makes an exit.

S-JG- What has been the highlight of your career so far?

BDL- Seeing Kate Winslet walk on the red carpet and getting my award from Princess Diana for glamour designer of the year.

S-JG- How have your own experiences influenced your work as a designer?

BDL- My own experiences are that no- one gives anything for nothing, you only get out what you put in. Respect those who respect you back and always, always, ALWAYS be true to yourself always.

S-JG- When you are not busy designing what could we find you doing?

BDL- Flopping on the sofa, reading, with the dogs piled all around me.

S-JG- If you could click a button and be anywhere in the world where would you be?

BDL- I would be on the beach with white sand, and a house with glowing white muslin drapery over looking the sea with my dogs and some one to love.

S-JG- Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

BDL- (laughs) A lot richer than I am now and I see myself in that very house that I just talked to you about.

S-JG- You have been so successful, what advice would you give anyone wanting to follow in your footsteps?

BDL- You have got to want it 1000%, you have got to keep your eyes open, your mouth shut, your ears open and you have got to be hungry because if you are not any of those you will never make it work. Pay your dues first because you can’t go in at the top.

S-JG- Work your way up...

BDL- Exactly.

A great well balanced interview with some searching questions.

The VIP Area

Envision yourself at the hottest red carpet event and you’re half way there. Every diva in sight will be oozing glamour in these glasses. Embellishment is the key to gaining your celebrity status. Jewels, cut-out designs and lace adorn coloured frames in shades of red, pink, blue and black. Oversized and angular shapes are vital, and tinted lenses will add a star touch to these show stopping specs.

Unearthed Elements

This trend captures the textures, colours and minerals of nature. Small frames in browns, greens and beiges provide a subtle colour palette to contrast the tough materials of bamboo, wood, horn and leather that construct the frames. Clear plastics with blushed tones feature, and tortoise shell prints remain popular in this understated style.

Shaping the Future

Be daring with this playful trend. With exaggerated frames in butterfly, cat-eye and geometric shapes it’ll be hard to go unnoticed. Enter into a futuristic world of vision with vibrant colours and loud prints that takes geek chic to new levels. Contrast clear and coloured lenses with chunky plastic frames to make the ultimate animated statement.

Love’s Vision

Love is definitely in the air this season, and it’s ok to be a hopeless romantic. Embrace your femininity with amorous tones of pink, peach and cream that surround curved and narrow shapes. Small embellishments and flower patterns add subtle detailing to these delicate frames, and tinted lenses add a powerful element to this passionate love affair.

Have you contemplated what improving your personal branding can do for your career prospects?

Did you know that...

People form an opinion of us based on our appearance within the first 30 seconds of meeting us whether we like it or not, and before we’ve even said a word we have already made a lasting first impression, good or bad. First impressions really do count. The fact you are putting yourself out there should make you more aware of how other people perceive you based on your non-verbal communication - in this highly visual world we are sophisticated interpreters of non-verbal messages whether we realise it or not.

55% of a first impression is based purely on your appearance, so if you’re attitude to your image and grooming routine is ‘that will do’, it most certainly won’t if you want to make a good or better than average first impression. In addition, our initial judgment includes other factors such as education, intelligence, social statue, confidence, attractiveness and likeability, all lead to a positive or negative opinion.

Let’s start by considering these questions:

  1. How do you achieve a higher level of professionalism by ‘looking the part’ whilst continually maintaining the respect from other colleagues?
  2. How do you secure more new business by ensuring colleagues trust you or sell more products without coming on too strong?
  3. How do you guarantee feeling more confident in that all important job interview?

Whatever your professional goals, a Corporate Image Consultant, Corporate Personal Stylist or Personal Branding Expert can enhance your professional image and improve your behavior so as to help you best represent you in the best possible way in the workplace.

I firmly believe that effective image and grooming training will benefit the following:

  • Senior management who wish to improve their corporate flair, define their own personal brand and improve overall performance.
  • Sales teams that require a unique edge over competitors, positive differentiation through correct representation and brand consistency, increasing sales.
  • Executives who know that personal branding will enhance and make an impact on their career development.
  • Company owners who are major players within their organisations but their requirements need to be addressed in a discreet 1-2-1 environment.
  • Client-facing staff members - addressing appropriate business wear (formal or smart casual), personal grooming and behavior.
  • Executives who regularly appear in the media – developing the right personal brand and enhancing his or her overall image for all situations that conveys self-assurance and inner confidence.

Regardless of how large or small an organisation, considerable amounts of time and money can be spent on a corporate rebrand from training new staff and hiring management teams to designing the company’s logo and launching a website.

A new corporate identity may well attract potential customers but in reality the bottom line reflects on how your employees present themselves in public, which is one of the very first things prospective clients experience.

The most influential companies in the world today all have clear brand identities, combining consistent branding and effective marketing, which is communicated through their employees. Once complete synergy has been achieved a company will only then be able to reach its full potential.

On Claire Dane

Jackie Says: Claire Danes looked beautiful at last night’s awards with very classic makeup that was careful applied not to age this glamorous young star. Emphasis was cleverly drawn to the lips with a gorgeous slick of satin-finish lipstick. Get red carpet glamour simply with well-applied red lips paired with toned-down eyes. You just want a bit of iridescence to give the eyebrows a lift and the brow-bone a sheen.

Try Bella Pierre’s Shimmer Powder in Champagne, a soft sparkle and aptly-named shade for the occasion. Cover the lips with some of your chosen foundation to provide a base and to give the lippy something to cling to. Pick a lip liner in the same shade and outline the lips then fill in wit the pencil, again to help create a base.

The secret to long-lasting red lips is to build up layers of colour with a good soft brush and blot after each application. I recommend Cosmetics a La Carte’s limited edition long-lasting, deep, velvet red called Dr Rita Lip Queen after the eminent cosmetic Dr of the stars Rita Rakus.

On Kate Winslet

Jackie says: Kate’s look last night was really spot-on. It was all about clear, flawless line-free, plump, healthy skin and the no-makeup look. Her skin was gorgeous, look at the sheen on her forehead and across the apples of the cheeks reflecting the red carpet lighting.

The key to getting this look is about your preparation and tools. You really have to prep the skin so well and ensure that you have used a delicate scrub regularly for the days leading up to the occasion. Karin Herzog Mild Scrub is perfect for this with its fine marble powder spheres to slough off dead skin without any abrasive action. Moisturise thoroughly and remove any excess with a facial tissue. Moisturiser helps provide a base for your makeup to adhere to.

Try out a primer over the top of your moistuirser to help minimize lines, even the skin tone and close open pores. Avon’s Magix Face Perfector is a great one and helps reduce oil and shine in all the wrong places over the face so you can apply a sheen in all the right places. Use a soft fan-shaped brush lightly dipped in a light iridescent powder across all the surfaces of the face that light naturally hits such as the nose, forehead, cheeks and chin.

  • Kim Kardashian sporting the safari trend
Kim Kardashian sporting the safari trend

Teaming these garments with chiffon and sequins has given this very masculine style a feminine touch. A super slimming outfit for this style is an over sized khaki or sand coloured shirt, rolled up sleeves and a brown leather belt to synch you in at the waist.

The combinations are endless so it is easy to focus on your own individual ideas. For example, instead of the shirt, you could create this look with a pair of khaki or sand long cropped trousers, adding a simple vest or tee shirt.

Accessorising with a satchel bag and a straw hat can really give you that bang-on-trend safari look. Add a pair of heels or some pumps, depending on whether you want to be casual or dressy.

  • Cheryl Cole in a printed mini dress
Cheryl Cole in a printed mini dress

These prints are chic, elegant and glamorous and not only do they look striking but they do wonders for our figures, giving the illusion of being smaller and bigger in all the right places. Wearing any kind of print this season is right on trend and what ever your shape there is a print for you.

If you are a confident fashionista wear top to toe print, add some sandals and don't be afraid to pile on the accessories. Just make sure you make this look your own and, if being too bold isn’t for you, then wear a statement piece such as a print blouse or a skirt with a chunky ring and a satchel.

Taking this look from day to night is really simple as adding a pair of killer heels and changing your make-up is all that is required.

We’ve colluded with the uber-stylish guys at I Love 2 Love, a hot new leather jackets and accessories website, for their tips on making the tricky transition to Spring.…in high style.

Love your leather

This season’s all about the juxtaposition of hard and soft, feminine and boyish…pull off this look with aplomb with a flirty little dress peeking out from beneath a lived-in look biker jacket. IL2L has some women’s leather jackets this season. Womens Leather Asymmetric Biker Jacket - £90.

Scarves say it all

Scarves, the stylista’s staple, really come into their own at this time of year. Opt for sumptuous, soft fabrics to contrast against your leather jacket. Think about a versatile style, which will work just as well with your outfit once you’ve taken your jacket off too. The V Fraas scarf is bang-on-trend - £18.50.

Oversize bags let you layer up…

If you can’t bear to cover up your lovely new outfit, tote a huge bag, which will hold a light-weight warmer, like a cashmere cardie. We love this Kipling Suzu Large Vintage Leather Handbag - £145.

  • Rihanna sporting the baggy white shirt
Rihanna sporting the baggy white shirt

White doesn’t just keep you cool through the long days of summer; it also symbolizes purity, innocence and cleanliness and what girl doesn’t want to be associated with those three things? A big look this year is the oversized white shirt, so why not wear this with a pair of jeans or shorts and a coloured vest top, some bangles and a chunky necklace for a great day time look.

Another stylish way to wear the white shirt is to use it as a dress, synch it in at the waist with a belt and finish it off with some shades and a pair of thong sandals. Simply exchange the sandals for some sexy heels and you have the perfect party outfit.

  • Tyra Banks in jogging bottoms and heels.
Tyra Banks in jogging bottoms and heels.

Working out will never be a chore again. Adding a girly touch is essential to be able to pull off this tomboy trend, and with knee length socks and bra tops it is easy to do just that. Dress a pair of drawstring jogging bottoms with a vest top, heels and some chunky accessories for the perfect, sassy daytime look.

Alternatively a sweatshirt, knee length socks and heels is so this season, and a great outfit for a night on the town.

  • Kate moss in a Burberry trench coat
Kate moss in a Burberry trench coat

The lightweight, waterproof design was perfect for the soldiers coping with the terrible conditions in the trenches, and perfect for us! We love trench coats for the way they nip us in at the waist, keep us warm when it's cold, cool when it's hot and, of course, keep us dry when it's wet.

This is the perfect cover up for spring. Wear an oat coloured trench coat with a pair of thigh high socks, strappy heels and some shades for a casual but sophisticated daytime look. Transform the look into night time by swapping the light coloured trench for a deep blue number that can be teamed with a pair of black tights, a clutch and a pair of heels - and you're ready to paint the town red!

  • Kaley Cuoco in tribal print
    Kaley Cuoco in tribal print

Now is the time to go tribal, in print, in colour and in jewellery. Think of long, hot days and striking sunsets! Try dressing a bold patterned maxi dress with some wooden beads and bangles and finish it off with a head scarf and clogs.

This funky and dynamic look can be used for night or day. If maxi dresses are not to your taste then go for a statement piece like a tulip-shaped, animal patterned skirt and finish this off with a vest top, a wicker bag, a pair of sandals and, of course, some bold wooden jewellery.

  • Shakira in the thigh high trend
Shakira in the thigh high trend

Confidence is key to pulling off the thigh high trend so, if you want your pins on show and all eyes on you, go for a bold colourful dress, add some shades and a pair of clogs and you have the perfect casual look.

Exchange your clogs for heels and your shades for a clutch bag and you have yourself an easy to wear party outfit, but be careful not to have too much on show.

If you feel like you are in danger of doing so and feel a little self conscious, add a coloured pair of tights or some knee high socks as these tips will help you to feel comfortable, and therefore more confident.

  • Rihanna in the double denim look
Rihanna in the double denim look

Jeans are distressed or patchwork looking, and have come along way since the 80’s. In order to avoid the double denim style appearing as one block of colour, try accessorising the look with a vest top, a belt, a pair of shades and some clogs.

But if the double denim look isn’t for you then wearing one key piece such as a pair of dungarees or a denim dress would be ideal. Why not team a pair of patchwork jeans with a baggy white shirt, sandals and a satchel for an eye-catching, casual spring/summer look?

Blue denim shirt from Dorothy Perkins £28

  • Paris Hilton underwear tend
    Paris Hilton underwear tend

These are all taking over this spring/summer, but don’t go too sexy with blacks and reds - stick to the SS/10 colour palette with neutral and pale colours, such as soft pinks and peaches, which will create a more elegant look. This style is both edgy and daring and the good news is that you don’t have to be over exposed to be able to join in.

If the corset is your style then team it with a long, finely knitted cardigan and pumps for a casual daytime look or, if the bra and knickers is more for you, then cover it up with chiffon, lace or a transparent dress like this Heidi Klein, Formantara Embroidered Dress, (£186.00). Add some heels to complete this look and you are ready for a wild night out.

  • Lily Cole in white lace
    Lily Cole in white lace

The hard and soft style combination is everywhere this Spring/Summer 2010, so wearing a soft fabric like lace teamed with a hard material like a distressed denim jacket means you will be bang on trend. Be careful when wearing lace as shades like red can be very harsh so keep in mind this season’s colours, and go for white and ice cream tones. These colours work well with lace as they soften this look even more.

Try wearing a light grey lace dress with an oversized knit and a pair of pumps for a minimal, casual spring style; alternatively dress this up with a long bolero, a pair of high heeled ankle boots and accessorise with a statement ring. Beware of over accessorising though, as lace is detailed enough.

  • Sophie adorning her Fendi Fur
    Sophie adorning her Fendi Fur

As Britain is gripped with freezing conditions yet again this winter, we are taking notes from the Italians and investing in real fur to warm up. According to the British Fur Trade Association, the end of the noughties has seen a ‘significant growth in fur sales’ in the UK, compared with sales figures at the end of the nineties. As a nation that usually turns our noses up at real fur, something spectacular would have to happen to sway us. A recent visit to the Fendi headquarters in Rome provided a suggestion...

Presenting to you the 24 carat gold Fendi fur coat! As the original experts, Fendi proves once again that it will never be outdone when it comes to providing innovative ways to wear fur. Then again, gold fur seems like the perfect marriage in sophistication to us...how could others compete?

Patrizia at Fendi informed us that the coat is made of mink fur that has been dyed black and placed into a vacuum with a 24 carat solid gold bar. This process causes the gold to encase the fur, and provides a permanent finish with a gorgeous gold lustre. The coat will be available to buy for the Autumn/Winter 10/11 season and will retail at a grand total of 40,000€ (approximately £35,000). It’s a little out of our price range, but if you want a lavish garment to save you from the unbearable cold next winter, keep your eyes open for this precious piece.

Rumour has it... Fendi veteran Karl Lagerfeld was in the building at the same time as iStylista!

Skin with star quality

That picture-perfect skin is hard to achieve but NOT impossible. Just remember the basics: cleanse, exfoliate, tone and prime the skin - preparation is the key to this and try and get this part done well in advance then leave your skin to 'rest' for a couple of hours before applying makeup. Often when you have just washed your face your pores will still be open and your skin discoloured from contact with your towel so you will not get a good calm base with which to work. Try a primer to provide a base for your foundation which ensures it will stay put longer but will also help give the illusion of flawless radiant skin. I recommend; Avon Magix Face Perfector or Beauty Flash Balm by Clarins. Try and choose a light foundation and build up the coverage gradually rather than going for the strongest coverage you can lay your hands on. Spread small spots of foundation all over the face and use your fingertips (ring and middle-fingers only as your index finger will apply to much pressure to the skin) or a foundation brush such as my Jackie Tyson Professional Foundation Brush to blend, blend, blend. You are aiming to make the foundation disappear before applying another light layer.

Camera-friendly contours

The camera is not very forgiving and as stars glide down the red carpet, shots are taken from all angles. Heaven forbid, but there is no time to pose! Catch the camera out by ensuring that your face looks well contoured so shots look good from whatever angle. Cheekbones are the heart of the face and you can easily accent these using a simple shadowing technique. Use a light shimmery powder (a shade or two lighter than your skin tone) in an arc from the outside of the eye socket nearest the temple to the top of the cheekbone. Just beneath the arc, use your favourite blusher, mixed with some of the shimmer powder and lightly dust the cheekbones in an up and outward motion. The contrast between the two colours gives the illusion of screen-friendly cheekbones and you can dust additional powder on the décolletage for some added glamour. I always have Iridescent Powder in Golden Bronze by MAC in my kit.

Pouting-perfection

This year there are two very definite looks to choose from; super-star red or feminine flirty. Red lipstick is a lot easier to apply than you think. The secret is to invest in a matching lip liner and again it's all in the prep. Brush your lips with a wet toothbrush gently to remove the top layer of dead skin and then use a good moisturiser such as Lucas Papaw all over the lips and lip line and massage in for a few minutes/ Leave this to settle for a few minutes and blot with a tissue. Next, apply the matching lip liner to your chosen red and trace a fine, faint line around the lips. This is not to provide colour, just to provide an outline to fill. Always use a clean lip brush to apply your lipstick to keep the colour pure and blend it into the lips in a 'push and sweep' motion. Blot with a tissue after first application and then start the process again for layer two. Once complete you can even soften the look with a transparent lip gloss or one in the same red. If you want high-shine but no stickiness add a touch of Vaseline to your brush during bending. I love Santa from Cosmetics A La Carte. Feminine and flirty is a quick and easy one to master. Just use a lip liner as close to the colour of your own lips that you can find and trace a fine line for increased definition then, use your lip gloss wand and apply sparingly from corner to corner. Apply a second coat for staying power but if you are going for a hair-down style go matt or you spend the evening pulling hair away from your lip gloss.

Show-stopping peepers

Eye lashes are great for added glamour and making your look that bit more red-carpet, but experiment first because you only get one chance to apply them correctly. Lashes usually need to be sized to fit your eyes so measure them by holding up the strip lash against your own lash line and chop off any extra length with a pair of clean nail scissors. Apply your mascara then put a fine line of adhesive onto the strip lash, wait for the glue to go tacky then apply. Stick the corners down with a fine brush and then work your way to the middle of the lid. Hold in place for a few minutes before moving on to the other eye. I like the pro eyelash kit from thepromakeupshop.com with enough lashes and tools to practice and create any look you want from natural to show-stopping. Eylure has a fantastic range of lashes to choose from too. Fill in any gaps with some gel or liquid eyeliner and a very fine application brush. Don't use a pencil because it may dislodge the lashes. Curling your lashes after application can help blend your own with the strip lashes.

Don't you just love a good queue!

This fact may be the simple reason so many of us are heading online. I mean whose go the time these days to queue? Often regarded as utterly pointless it can get rather annoying... and then the queue rage starts to kick in!

In fact, 47% of us suffer from what is known as queue rage with 21% admitting that have stormed out of a shop after queuing for three minutes or less (I’m guilty!). A frightening 20% of us argue with other shoppers and 29 per cent admitting to raising our voices or getting angry with shop staff!

So why is it that we don’t mind patiently queuing outside stores like Jack Wills at Sale time? ... well, it’s because there’s a bargain at the other end.

In fact bargains change everything, especially in this tight climate.

Chantelle on her recent wedding day. As a classic pear she looked at detailing on the shoulders to balance her body shape.
Find a wedding dress that suits your body shape

The most exciting and of course the most important item on your shopping list before your special day is finding your perfect wedding dress. With so much choice out there the task is indeed a daunting affair so don’t be fazed by all the different styles and never become dazed by what the shop assistants tell you.

The secret to feeling confident in your wedding dress is about understanding and appreciating what body shape you have before you begin. Everyone is different so remember, what might look fabulous on somebody else may not necessarily suit you.

If your are unsure about what body shape you are then take a friend along who has a similar build and frame to you, when you pick out a dress get her to try it on for you as well. It’s always easier to see what you like and dislike on somebody else.

Focus on your favourite bits

We all have favourite bits about our bodies that we like more than others so it’s essential that you focus on accentuating these body parts, even if they happen to be in places that no one else can see!

For example, if you have well toned arms, beautiful shoulders and neck then don’t just go for the typical A-Line style of dress; why not expose this area for everyone to see by choosing a dress with spaghetti straps or even one that has a halter neckline.

It’s not about what you wear but how you wear it

You ARE gorgeous and just remember that, also YOU are the one getting married! Your partner thinks you are beautiful in everyway so if you have doubts about how you feel in your wedding dress then take a second to think about all the favourite times you’ve shared and remember all the funny things you’ve done together.

It’s a good idea to practise walking around in your wedding dress in front of a mirror, the idea is to feel confident wearing it and it’s a chance to assess your posture. It’s time to hold your head up high and look in the mirror one last time; YOU are the lucky one getting married so wear the biggest smile you have ever seen. You will instantly look and feel confident without even knowing it!

Face your wedding party with confidence

Make-up plays a big part to your overall wedding look. It’s advisable to shop around for a make-up artist and it’s a good idea to ask for a referral before you commit as I’ve heard horrendous stories of brides looking too made and caked up … It’s not a good look in general and especially not on your wedding day.

Ideally you want the make-up to enhance your natural features, you still need to look like YOU afterwards. After your trial session with your make-up artist, ask her to take a photo of your make-up after you have had it applied so you can see what it looks like in pictures. If there is anything you would like tweaked before your special day then you can show your make-up artist whereabouts on your photo.

Feel confident underneath it all

It’s not just about what you wear on the outside on your wedding day but it’s as important what you wear underneath your dress. Never underestimate the power of sexy underwear, there’s nothing like wearing beautiful lingerie to make you feel like a million dollars. When you hit the shops you’ll be spoilt for choice, there’s heaps of gorgeous bridal lingerie out there so spend time trying on different pieces and seeing how it makes you feel.

You’ve decided on your bridal lingerie so why not have a quiet moment by yourself, lie on your bed in just your lingerie and think about how sexy it makes you feel – love your body for what it is. The truth is if you can’t accept your body for what it is you’ll never be truly happy with who you are or how you look.

What a fantastic night! The Stereophonics were almost in touching distance and the sound rang around the small venue in Glasgow. The band admitted they were rusty, with Kelly Jones practicing a guitar solo he hadn’t done for a couple of years.

This did not detract from how good they sounded with old and new hits alike being lapped up by the excited crowd. From the first song The Bartender and the Thief to the amazing last song Dakota, they enthralled us all and it was a real treat to be among so few, it made the 350 mile round trip worth every effort. • How confident do you feel in what you're wearing?
How confident do you feel in what you're wearing?

We've recently received a few emails from members looking for some confidence boosting tips when it comes to style and dress. Chantelle has tackled each and listed her answers below which you may find quite interesting:

What's the best confidence boosting colour to wear - and if that colour doesn't suit me, what can I do to incorporate it into my outfit?

Colour is a very personal thing, different warm and cool colour palettes suit different individuals but we will each have our favourite colours that make us feel instantly more comfortable and confident in. However in this instance, strong contrasting colours worn together, for example black and navy worn with bright reds or purples show that you’re an assertive person. You could also incorporate wearing dark tones with very light tones, almost like a uniform to show you have air of authority above the other team.

Do any fabrics inspire/sap confidence… does stiff fabric make you feel more authorative, should you wear cotton as it cools the body making you less stressed or should you avoid light colours which show sweat!

To inspire confidence you should always wear fabrics that complement the situation you’re in. In this instance fabrics will need to work with your body rather than against it by not restricting your performance in any way. However, if you’re in a corporate environment then a crisp cotton shirt worn with a high quality wool suit says you mean business and gives you instant ‘power’ within yourself. It’s always a good idea to think carefully about the occasion and dress appropriately for it, for example even if you are not the most confident person you should look to dress in a similar and acceptable style to the group of people you are meeting – keeping under the radar and on par with everyone else.

What is the ultimate confidence boosting clothing tip?

By breaking things down into bite size chunks always helps us overcome confidence issues more easily and by focusing on the parts of your body that you feel most confident about rather than your appearance, as a whole is a great start. For example if you have a noticeably smaller waist in comparison to the rest of your body then highlight it by wearing belts or clothing which fits neatly around this area. By understanding what clothing styles suit your body shape is the secret to boosting your confidence.

  • The flirtacious office party
    The flirtacious office party

After the third pint of Malibu and pineapple the room is on fast spin, your make-up is on the slide and suddenly Kevin from accounts is beginning to look fanciable. You may be in the festive spirit with your colleagues drinking and acting like there’s no tomorrow but you can be sure that your boss will be looking on as sober as the day they interview you.

Of course we want to let our hair down at the office Xmas party but what we don’t want in the morning is rumors and regrets.

Spirits run high and emotions can be as mixed as your drinks as a combination of awkwardness which comes with combining the social with the professional creates a confusing atmosphere. Should you be friendly and familiar or frosty and in control? It’s no wonder people don’t know how to behave.

So here are a few simple tips on how to survive the office party, have fun and come out it with your sanity and prospects intact.

  • Decide before you go to have no more than two alcoholic drinks. Three drinks means a loss of control so don’t risk it. Keep topping up with water and there’s no need to tell others what you are doing. They’ll only force your hand.
  • Don’t wear revealing, trashy or provocative clothes. You need to maintain your professional reputation and you could be remembered for your sequined basque rather than your ace presentation skills for evermore.
  • Don’t get drawn into gossip. If the conversation turns that way either say nothing, change the subject or move places.
  • Don’t say, do or act in any way that you would not do in your workplace. The Polaroids the next day could mean the difference between promotion or passed over.
  • Remember people paste pics onto Facebook now. Enough said.
  • If someone is getting overly amorous remove yourself and make for the toilets. Don’t allow the bad behavior of others make you the subject for gossip the next day.
  • Don’t assume colleagues or your manager are friends. Never share personal details or grievances about the job and colleagues in this seemingly relaxed environment. It could be later used against you.
  • Do keep your ear to the ground for information about staff morale and office politics.
  • Remember you don’t have to stay til the bitter end. Set yourself a time limit and slip away when you feel like it.
  • Even if you do have someone romantically in your sights don’t let on. Some companies operate a no-fraternisation policy so beware.
  • Use the opportunity to network, introduce yourself to people from other departments and learn insider knowledge. This could give you a competitive edge.
  • Decide how you are going to get home upfront and have the number of a good cab company and get knowledge of the tubes/buses etc before hand so you are not left alone and stranded.
  • With a little aforethought and restraint you can get through the work “do” with your dignity and reputation intact. Save the table top dancing and sequined hot pants for another night out with friends!

Have a very merry Christmas x

  • 3 weekly 30 minute workouts and you'll look and feel great th...
3 weekly 30 minute workouts and you'll look and feel great this party season

All you need to put by is 3 or 4 simple 30 minute workouts a week. Here’s Louise’s suggestions:

Tummy Tuck

“If your first thought is to go running and do some stomach crunches, think again!

The primary role of the abdominal (core) muscles is to stabilise the spine against flexion (bending forward), extension (bending backwards) and rotation (twisting). Great 'abs' is all about nutrition. Doing hundreds of crunches is damaging to your lower back and only serves to exacerbate the bad posture that comes from sitting at your desk every day.”

“You can make an enormous difference in just one week before your Christmas party if you cut out alcohol and processed foods, drink plenty of water and do some metabolic exercise including weight training and cardiovascular intervals to fire up the fat burning process.”

“The plank[i], side plank[ii] and quad ‘Supermans’[iii] will go a long way to making your spine healthier and improve your posture, instantly giving the impression of losing a few pounds.”

Tight Ass

“Sitting on your bum all day, not only reduces circulation to this area but also weakens and inhibits the gluteal muscles. You need to activate these muscles then get them stronger and looking better. Doing Hip Bridging[iv] at home will start the process, and the Cook Hip Lift is a fantastic exercise for working the glutes. Start by pulling one knee to your chest and lifting the hips by squeezing the glutes on the opposite side. Hold this lifted position for 10 seconds and repeat 3 times on each side.”

“However, for these muscles to look and work the best (meaning more calories burned and a healthier lower back) you need to load them with more than just your bodyweight. Exercises such as squats, deadlifts, step ups and lunges are all great choices. The more that you use the right muscle groups at the right time with an appropriate amount of strength the more calories you will be burning when you are doing a run, class, or even walking down the street. Don't be afraid to lift weights; females have ten times less testosterone (a hormone that stimulates muscle growth) than men, meaning that you will not build 'bulk'. You will however fire you metabolism through the roof and burn some serious fat.”

Bingo Wings

“Forget about bicep curling tins of beans and tricep dips off the back of a chair to beat bingo wings. A 500g tin of beans won’t help you to achieve a strong and healthy body, or sexy arms for your Christmas party dress. You need to be doing exercises that involve large muscle groups - press ups, pull ups and inverted rows – to help define muscles and burn calories.”

Get on the move…

“Interval training is the most effective form of cardiovascular training to help your body to burn fat. To shock the body into burning fat try alternating one minute of sprinting on the treadmill, cross trainer or bike with one minute recovery and repeat six to ten times. Combine this with weight training and being as active as possible when you are not exercising and see the difference in your entire figure before Christmas.”

“Your revved-up metabolism will also mean you are much more likely to keep weight off rather than gain it back, which often happens after diets that restrict calories and slow the metabolic rate. It also means you can indulge a little more when you have your Christmas lunch knowing that your body is burning more calories even at rest.”

“Exercising 3 - 4 times a week is generally an ideal amount of exercise to see results, without being over trained. Exercising too often doesn't give your body enough time to rebuild and recover from your previous training and training only once a week will not give your body enough stimuli to burn fat or build muscle. Focus on intensity of exercise in your workouts rather than duration.”

[i] Plank

Target Muscles: Abdominals, mid-section stabilisers
Execution: Lie face down. Lift your body from the floor so you are supported only by your forearms and toes. Hold your body straight from ankles to shoulders.

[ii] Side Plank

Target Muscles: Internal/external obliques, abdominals, mid-section stabilisers
Execution: Lie on your side. Lift your body from the floor so you are supported only by one forearm and foot. Hold your body straight from ankles to shoulder.

[iii] Superman

Target Muscles: Glutes, spinal erectors, mid-section stabilisers
Execution: On all fours with a flat back, slowly lift your right arm and left leg. Pause at the top position, and then slowly lower and repeat with opposite arm/leg. Keep your torso as still as possible throughout the movement.

[iv] Hip-Glute Bridge

Target Muscles: Glutes, spinal erectors, mid-section stabilisers
Execution: Lie on your back with feet hip-width apart and knees bent. Place your arms across your chest. Lift your hips from the floor by squeezing your glutes and lower back. Pause at the top, and then lower under control.

How long do you spend shopping for your Christmas Party outfit?

A total of 997 women between the ages of 18 and 45 were surveyed and I’m sure you’ll agree that the results are staggering.

Here’s the facts:

  • 72 hours were spent shopping for an outfit
  • 96 hours were dedicated to getting in shape,
  • 12% of respondents said they would hire a personal stylist for the occasion.

Managing director of the Clothes Show Live, Gavin Brown, said: "The Christmas party is the highlight of everyone's festive calendar - the place to be and be seen and it's no wonder women across the country spend hundreds of hours making sure they look their very best."

It seems that when it comes to picking your favourite style of underwear bigger is now better with Big Pants topping the lingerie charts. A huge 67% thought that women look most attractive to men in Big Pants compared to only 16% preferring g-strings.

Participants were also asked what female celebrity should be crowned with the best bum, and the honorary title went to Miss Kylie Minogue - those infamous gold hot pants certainly did pay off. Cheryl Cole came second and Beyoncé a close third. Surprisingly, J-Lo was voted only fifth with Rachel Stevens beating her in fourth place.

Like the stars that came out in our survey, Simone Péréle’s new collection is inspired by iconic women and art alike. Simone Péréle’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection is a truly indulgent line, presenting art-like pieces that exude splendour and sophistication. • Stop procrastinating!
    Stop procrastinating!

Is there something in your life you keep putting off? Do you find yourself needlessly surfing the net, watching Jeremy Kyle or eating direct from the fridge to avoid something?

Perhaps you are trying to ignore that difficult phone call, tacking your tax return or studying your last scary-looking bank statement? It may seem like a good tactic to cross your fingers and hope it will go away but you know deep down doing the ostrich doesn’t get you any where.

Now remember back when you have been in a similar position before, you know that you will feel better, lighter, happier and liberated when the job is done. So why is it then that we procrastinate when it’s better to get the job done?

Procrastination is fear-based behavior. We start to build up a whole set of assumed negative outcomes before we even start the job. For example we might think the following:

  • It is going to be too difficult/will take a long time
  • It might be painful or make us feel bad about ourselves
  • It won’t be “perfect” so why bother?
  • What if we fail or are rejected?

These, we must remember, are just negative assumptions but our inner critic is having a field day. Our negative internal dialogue is setting us up to fail; making us feel insecure, vulnerable and disabling our energy to the point of inertia, even depression.

But you can get out of the rut and into the groove.

Here are some of my top coaching tips I use to help my clients teleport themselves out of analysis paralysis and into action.

  • Start by setting yourself small time limits. 20 minutes dealing with the task then and a 5 minute break – tea, washing up, a walk – then start again.
  • Be accountable to someone – email or phone a friend or relative and show what you have accomplished. Or better still hire a coach!
  • Build in small treats for work accomplished – a nice bath, phone a friend, a glass of wine in the evening
  • Do the tough stuff first. It then gets easier.
  • Keep to-do lists to 3 actionable things
  • Be realistic with timescales. Don’t attempt to do a week’s work in a day
  • Ask yourself if you are stuck – is this better to do this in 1 hour or 20?
  • Don’t aim for perfection aim for progress
  • Remember obstacles you have overcome from the past. You did it then you can do it now.
  • Imagine how good you’ll feel when you’ve done it!
  •

Taking action means being responsible, facing up and being an “adult”. Taking care of business may sometimes feel painful and onerous but when we confront the tough stuff and deal with it we grow and feel more in control.

In the words of the great Martin Luther King “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase. Just take the first step”.

Or as the more current soothsayer Nike would put it – “Just do it”.

Launched in May 2009, iStylista's aim has always been to give fashion confidence to hard working busy women, who are cash-rich, but time-poor. The genius of iStylista is despite their having a demographic to whom they are lovingly dedicated to, the moment you enter the site you feel like an individual - someone who is being catered for based on their singular needs, as opposed to just one of an ever-expanding group.

The premise behind iStylista is that with our hectic lifestyles and reliance on the internet, it's becoming much harder to be able to dress stylishly while keeping to within our budget. iStylista caters for this by allowing it's users to register and provide details about their skin tone, eye colour, whether they have broad shoulders, long legs or skinny calves. For the cash-conscious among us, you can also provide details on how big a budget you have at your disposal. In essence, after providing such specific information regarding size, shape, colour and looks - it becomes apparent the amount of careful thought that has gone into designing this service.

Once you've added as little or as much information as you wish, the website will start recommending items for you based the options that you chose; good colours for your skin tone, good shapes for your body type, and items in higher or lower price ranges. All of these items of clothing have been reviewed by iStylista's team of stylists, headed up by the award-winning personal stylist Chantelle Znideric.

As you can imagine, iStylista is in a position to be selective regarding it's merchants, offering such a new and original service. From a merchant perspective, iStylista is a great vehicle through which customer's can make intelligent purchases. iStylista's audience is affluent and engaged, making them a hugely desirable choice as an affiliate for any serious fashion retailer.

  • Is fear the biggest obstacle to your success?
Is fear the biggest obstacle to your success?

Halloween may be behind us but are you still scaring the be-sequined pants off yourself?

It’s a small word with deep and far reaching implications but fear is what lies behind some of our most basic core emotions.

Jealousy, greed, insecurity, racism, low self-esteem, anger - the grim roll call of our darkest feelings. Yet fear is an essential part of our human condition protecting us from potential harm and is a natural state when we consider loss of loved one’s, losing a job or change.

What we like to look at and unearth as coaches is the sort of fears that keep us stuck. These are the self-imposed obstacles which we erect to protect us though in reality hold us back from reaching our personal and professional potential. And it is these fears we will look at today and show you the tools to overcome them.

Common Fears We All Share

It may be reassuring to you to learn that we all share pretty much the same fears no matter how bold or confident the rest of the world may appear. It is widely reported that in surveys people put fear of public speaking above death as something they most dread. In the professional world other common fears include:

  • Looking stupid/not possessing adequate knowledge
  • Speaking up in meetings
  • Defending oneself
  • The unknown/change
  • Not being liked/thought of as professional
  • Saying “no”
  • Not being listened to/understood/respected
  • Not being “good enough”
  • Little Word Big Impact

When we play hostage to our fears there are negative consequences that seem to repeat themselves over and over again. For example if you always chose friends who are takers you will feel depleted and abused. If you refuse to speak up in meetings, despite having brilliant ideas to share, it will be the noisy but less competent that gets the kudos and promotion. Just some of the by-products of the “I’m not good enough” fear.

How has fear impacted on you? Do you feel stuck in dead end relationships with partners, friends and family? Fear may make your life feel reduced. Perhaps you feel isolated and frustrated; the only person in the world suffering such low confidence and for whom promotion and recognition have yet again by-passed you.

Avoidance, procrastination and “playing small” are great symptoms of fear-based behaviour. But putting off and delaying are poor tactics as the issue just grows in magnitude and becomes even more terrifying and fraught with potential disaster. Anyone recognize these self-sabotaging habits?

You and Your Big Bad Wolves

When you understand that a lot of your fears are entirely self-imposed it is worth looking to what it is you might be thinking about yourself and a given situation. Our perception of the world is based entirely on our beliefs. Our beliefs dictate our emotional response to a situation be it positive or negative.

For example good beliefs we may haveinclude thoughts such as “I can do this”, “I am able” or “I am curious about what change might mean”.
However we pick up a lot of limiting beliefs along the way too and from childhood onwards over-cautious parents, a playground bully, spiteful relative or insecure friend can instill a few which we wrongly interpret as the truth.

This is where the fears that keep us stuck reside in our psyches. These Negative Internal Dialogues (NIDs) come and cut you off at the knees when you wish to succeed with crowing chorus of “I am useless”, “I don’t deserve”, “I am not good enough”, “No one will love me unless…” I’m sure you’ve got plenty of your own to add.

Your NID is in fact an over-loud warning voice set to protect you from hurt (you learned this from painful experienced from the past) but it pays to remember your inner critic is not telling you the truth.

Switch off your NID

Turn your negative thought into a positive one and write it down. “I am unable” could become “I am entitled to try” for example. Spend time considering how your limiting beliefs are holding you back.

Keep a journal of all the great achievements in your life. That fact you are a loyal friend, look good in blue, have nice hair, are great with money etc. Keep reminding yourself of times in the past when you have succeeded and see this as evidence you can do it again.

Dare to challenge your fears and eventually, with practice they slip back into the shadows for good. Do that and victimhood, martyrdom and excuses become as outmoded as last year’s handbag. Opportunity then knocks and then life really starts looking good.

  • Improving your corporate image
    Improving your corporate image

There are a number of reasons for this. Firstly professional women are progressively more in demand, they’re now doing jobs that typically their male colleagues held onto for years and gaining respect for their own achievements. Dress code in the work place has definitely relaxed, gone are the days of wearing a stuffy skirt or trouser suit, now it’s all about portraying a more youthful yet ‘still’ serious image and having a distinguished yet effortless style that stands out!

Business casual wear on Fridays can be a potential nightmare too with many women not knowing what a smart/casual dress code involves or how to achieve their desired look.

Women are finding themselves competing against each other as well as with their male colleagues for the same promotions ... and this means that services such as business coaching and personal styling are growing in popularity as these types of services can help the individual achieve the edge they need.

There has never been a better time to address a more confident image at work because the outcome will always help you feel 100 times better about your current position and potentially what you are capable of achieving down the line.

The modern woman has grown to become more sensitive about her own body image, understandably, as there’s always a slight issue with comparing themselves with celebrity role models. In addition, there’s always been an underlying debate on whether ‘good looking’ girls do get ahead more quickly and no one wants to miss out.

However, the majority of the work of a stylist now involves trying to help corporate ladies appreciate what they have, making the very best of their good bits - in our opinion every size and shape can look fabulous when dressed in the right outfits.

Knowing how to dress for your body shape is one thing, but styling your work look to represent your personality is crucial when those promotions are starting to appear for the year ahead.

Seeking the assistance of a Personal Stylist and Corporate Image Consultant to revamp your style in the workplace means you can gain that edge you need to get your career off to a flying start in 2010.

Why not book a Corporate Image Personal Styling Consultation with iStylista.com founder, Chantelle Znideric today. Call Chantelle on 07971 484882 or visit www.personal-stylist.co.uk for more information.

Eloise & fellow ethical fashion enthusiast Beate
What’s been your career highlight to date?

I’ve just got onto a ‘luxury industry mentoring scheme, called Crafted, which will pair me up with a mentor from the luxury goods industry and help launch me into a bigger league. The product I produce is something very special and they have recognised this so want to propel me forwards.

Or maybe it was being filmed for a BBC documentary showing Livia Firth (an eco champion and Colin Firth’s wife) my collection at London Fashion Week in Feb 09. They edited us out annoyingly so it’s taken the shine off the experience.

Have you always been into ethical and sustainable fashion?

No, but I was a real early bird. None of my friends new what I was talking about but then they started to understand. It was about 2002 that I first read about it and knew that this was what I wanted for my life. Launching my own label came as a result of not finding high end fashion-led sustainable design.

What makes your brand stand out from the rest?

There is something fresh that’s very British with a fashion appeal. I think because I don’t have a fashion background I’m drawing entirely on my own aesthetic rather than coming from a part of the industry that would give you a signature which is influenced by other designers. Some people say there is also an Italian style to my work – I lived there for many years so maybe subtly this has influenced me too.

Favourite fashion brand/designer?

Vivienne Westwood. She is the ultimate ethical designer in that she uses her brand as a vehicle to influence change. She’s just got into Climate Change – good for her. She also designs fantastic clothes that are wearable year after year because they don’t follow trends and have such style and character. I often wear my tweed skirts with her shirts.

If you could have any person (past or present) wear one of your coats who would it be?

Tilda Swinton.

Why choose to wear ethical brands and sustainable fashion?

¬Because they are made with real respect and care for everyone. They are also healthier (no nasty chemicals) and now, fortunately, there is real choice. It makes you feel more respect for yourself and value your clothes rather than feeling guilty about shopping.

How do you keep up to date with eco fashion and what’s going on in the fashion industry with such a busy schedule?

I am a member of the Ethical Fashion Forum, which is a great networking place. But for ethical style I go to a great website, Sustain Your Style,  - which is pretty comprehensive and packed full of personality about sustainable fashion.

What one thing do you want to do before you die?

Start patchwork!

Do you have any tips or advice for students looking to get into a career as a sustainable fashion designer?

I would develop a knowledge of the issues, and the fabrics and the process of making. Decide what is important to you. There are so many issues, which is one of the problems in a way, such as carbon footprint, fair trade, waste & recycling, organic, craftsmanship.. the ways of looking at sustainability are many. It’s hard so it’s important to work out what your values are.

Best thing and worst thing about the fashion industry?

The throwaway aspect is awful and the making of clothing that won’t last. The good side is that there are wonderful makers and creative people bringing exquisite skill and beauty to us.

Do you have any tips on how to make our fashion more sustainable?

Buy less; only buy something you love. That way you’ll keep it for longer and really wear it. If it’s expensive you’ll be making that purchase work for you.

Are you working on any other exciting projects at the moment?

Yes! Just getting to work on my AW10. I’ve applied to London Fashion Week so hope to show again in Feb 10.

Check out Eloise's collection here or organise a visit to her new showroom in Farnham, Surrey.

  • Select the right statement shoes for your body shape
Select the right statement shoes for your body shape

1) Avoid ankle straps on shoes or sandals if you want your legs to appear slimmer and longer. If you have model-esque pins then go for this style all you like – lucky you!

2) A wedge heel is flattering for apple body shapes and they will make walking anywhere so much easier. They will also highlight how slim your ankles and calves are too!

3) To compliment your hourglass body shape opt for shoes that have a rounded toe or platforms with peep toes. Avoid pointed stilettos.

4) If you have a boyish rectangular shape then it is likely you have long slim legs too! Strut around in shoes with a straight slim heel to compliment the shape of them.

5) If you have a pear body shape wear platform shoes with straight heels to minimise the chunkiness of your calves. Avoid slim stiletto heels.

Layering is key throughout the colder months ahead so try wearing a long sleeve cotton t-shirt underneath your gorgeous girlie floral dress for warmth. Simply team it with a pair of buckled up leather boots for a smart/casual look and accessorise with a wide waist belt to define your waistline.

If you can’t bear to pack away your summer maxi dress and provided you didn’t spend a fortune on it then why not consider shortening the hem to maximise its wear in autumn with a pair of skyscraper ankle boots. Team with an oversized boyfriend cardigan, accessorise with a narrow waist belt worn on top and a mixture of chunky embellished cuff.

Create a stylish outfit for work by wearing a fitted white or black shirt underneath your colourful strapless prom dress. Tone everything else down by completing the look with black opaque tights and black patent platform courts. Accessorise the outfit with a neutral glass pearl ribbon necklace worn on top of the shirt.

Team your bold print embellished kaftan with skinny jeans for an effortless evening look. Simply layer a long sleeve t-shirt or wide strap vest top underneath and accessorise with a couple of long chained necklaces, killer zipped shoe boots and a colorful envelope clutch bag.

If you bought lots of pastel and nude coloured garments last season then why not brighten up your wardrobe by experimenting with dyes. Look to transform an old dress or nude blouse by dying them in one of this seasons gorgeous berry or teal colours. A quick go in the washing machine with a box of Dylon dye or a bottle of Jacquard acid dye will give those items a new lease of life!

We loved relaxing in those t-shirt dresses with gladiator sandals throughout summer but the lengths on them are just a little too short to wear now on their own. Get your scissors at the ready and carefully cut off a few inches off the bottom to create the perfect shaped t-shirt that you can wear with tailored trousers for work or effortlessly with jeans.

  • Pack the perfect holiday capsule wardrobe
Pack the perfect holiday capsule wardrobe

Splurge out on a couple of key pieces that will see you looking stylish with ease throughout your holiday.

Black linen trousers are a holiday essential; they’re comfortable to wear in all climates, lightweight to pack and it doesn’t matter if they crease in transit. These super versatile trousers will create an effortlessly stylish look from day through to evening.

Pack more tops than bottoms, as people tend to notice your top half more and if rolled up properly they will pack down to nothing whilst avoiding creasing. Make sure you take a decent selection of cool slinky cotton t-shirts for daywear and a couple of your favourite embellished designer tops for the evening.

Pack a pair of flat metallic sandals or flip-flops, which will look great worn with a bikini and silk kaftan by the poolside or with your new exquisite tribal maxi dress whilst sampling the finest local cuisine.

Pretty sundresses look cute worn on their own with flats during the day but add a chunky belt and some bold sparkling accessories just before heading out for the evening and you’ll instantly create a totally different look. Accessorise cleverly and you’ll get the best out of your separates creating endless outfits.

For those colder evenings why not take with you a big multi-way cardigan which you can wear in many different ways. Perfect for wearing on the plane in case of those chilly air conditioning spurts, this essential item means that it doesn’t even take up room in your holiday luggage.

A string bikini looks great on the hanger in your favourite boutique but if you take more than a D cup bra size then forget it. It’s not an attractive look to be hanging out all over place and if you enjoy swimming in the pool or diving in the sea, make sure you choose a style that has a little more support.

  • Find that perfect wedding dress
    Find that perfect wedding dress

Whether your wedding is 6 months away or even if you’ve just set the date for two years time, there’s no time like the present to start planning your fabulous look for the big day. Before you know it the day will be upon you so don’t make the mistake of being ill prepared.

With so much choice out there the task of finding your perfect wedding dress can indeed be a daunting affair, so for all you blushing brides to be this article will provide a few initial pointers worth remembering. Just remember to enjoy the entire selection process and never rush into anything until you’re 110% comfortable with your choice.

With all eyes on you to look fabulous there’s immense pressure on the day. When you actually think about it, it’s not just about finding the dress you’ve got all the accessories to think about too. The secret is to start by breaking the task down into manageable bite size chunks and writing a list of what you need to buy – basically get organised! Jot down some rough milestones and dates by each item; this will help you focus on each task individually; there’s a great sense of achievement at each and every stage.

When deciding on the style of your dress, first picture your wedding theme and venue and decide what will compliment it. Involving a few friends with a ‘creative mind’ is a great idea… but don’t be too swayed by their views, remember who’s day it is!Obviously how you look and feel in the dress is of the most importance, but the venue may actually inspire some of the finer detailing you choose. Go visit the venue with an open mind and just get the feel of the place – ideas for the dress will spring from everywhere.

Your wedding dress should ideally complement your natural body shape, don’t just try on (or be talked into) what’s in fashion and in the shops at the time because you might end up with the usual ‘bath towel’ style that every bride seems to adopt (and generally shouldn’t)! Try lots of styles, colours and shapes and see which one you (truly) feel most confident and comfortable in. Just like finding your loved one in the first place, you’ll know when you find the right one!

A great idea is to pin point parts of your body that you’re comfortable with and like. Look to showcase these areas (legs, bust, shoulders, arms etc).

Wedding magazines covering celebrity weddings are sometimes a great source of inspiration for dress ideas, but be sure not to make the mistake of just copying what you see. Your wedding dress should reflect your personality, so put your own stamp on your wedding dress through detail or ‘quirkiness’. What you think looks amazing on another bride may actually look terrible on you …

  • How to dress slimmer
    How to dress slimmer

There is certainly an eclectic mix of trends this season and it’s a wonder where one should start, but the secret to dressing yourself slim this season is to hand pick flattering styles that work with your shape. It’s all about creating illusions and focusing on accentuating the body parts you feel most confident about.

Skinny jeans and leggings are still huge but it doesn’t mean you have to follow the pack. Develop your own style. For us mere mortals, straight or bootleg style trousers and jeans in solid dark neutrals, with higher waistbands will definitely look more flattering. Wear with a shapely thicker high heel to appear elevated.

Pencil skirts and shift dresses with higher fitted waistbands will reveal a slimmer waistline, perfect for wearing to work or in the evening with eye catching accessories. Both are incredibly versatile staple items and will suit every shape! Perfect with dark patent platform court heels.

Party season means dresses will come out in force and if you need help creating a smoother silhouette invest in a pair of waist or thigh cinching magic knickers. A must if you want to appear a dress size smaller!

Three quarter length coats and knitwear in dark solid colours will make you appear slimmer when worn open with a lighter or brighter coloured top underneath. Longer pendant necklaces and silk printed lightweight scarves will also lengthen your figure.

  • Start by sorting your wardrobe out
Start by sorting your wardrobe out

Keeping safely within our comfort zones is often all too easy to do but by paying attention to revamping our image every so often is key to breaking out of those ruts we can easily find ourselves in, whatever the circumstances. Reinventing your image will help boost your confidence and you won’t be left feeling like the world is passing you by. Don’t hold back as it’s never too late to achieve your image aspirations and if you ever doubt the possibilities look to pop princess Kylie and queen of style Madonna for inspiration... their constant style reinventions continue to ensure their success!

Top Tips:

Reinventing your image starts with a basic wardrobe review in the comfort of your own home. Decide on which items make you feel good and which outfits you’ve received outstanding comments in. Details like the colour or style of garment will start to stand out and be sure to bin items that you don’t feel less than perfect in. It’s all too easy to get sentimental about items that may have cost you a small fortune in the past, so if you are not 100% confident in an item and it doesn’t fit your current lifestyle, age, or body shape, then it’s time to let it go.

A hair restyle will complete your new image so why not get dressed up in a smart outfit you feel confident in and treat yourself to a luxury hair salon consultation. The first impression of your outfit will give the hairdresser ideas of how they can restyle your hair to compliment your new look. Don’t go to your usual salon as they may not give you a new perspective on your hair and simply stick to what you’ve had in the past - a fresh pair of professional eyes will bring new inspiration.

Book a night out with the girls or perhaps in with your partner and dress to impress with your newfound image. A few hours before the big night spend a little time researching make-up looks you love, and then book an appointment at one of your favourite brand cosmetic counters. Remember to wear your date outfit and bring your make-up reference with you. Your make-up artist will be able to copy the look and transform you ready for a night out on the town – just be prepared for all the compliments you’ll receive!

Buying new items can be daunting especially if you don’t know what suits you. Having concluded your wardrobe review you’ll have identified separates that complete particular outfits so take these shopping with you and match suitable tops, bottoms or accessories. With your separates to hand this will save you time returning items. Make the decision there and then rather than transporting them home only to find they’re not quite right.

Always work with your body shape rather than against it as this will simply exhaust you and cloud your judgement. Over time your body shape may change slightly so be prepared to accept this and always look to focus on highlighting the areas you like about your figure. By demonstrating you are in control of these changes will give you confidence to keep reinventing your style and keep a positive mind over matter outlook on life.

  • How To Shop The January Sales
How To Shop The January Sales
  1. Create a wish-list in the run up to Christmas, make a note of items that you'd LOVE to buy if only they were that little bit cheaper. Make a note of the store you have seen the item in so you can hit these shops first. It’s important to try the item on so you know exactly the right size you need, and note it down, this means you don’t have to queue for an age in the fitting room queues. This exercise will save you time and it will also confirm the fact that if you really liked it before Christmas then you will more than likely still love it, making it a well worthwhile purchase. Hopefully you will strike gold and find that the item is on sale with a huge reduction!

  2. Set yourself a budget that you can afford. Sale shopping can be impulsive when you’re caught up in the moment so it's pointless trying to save money if it leads you into debt.

  3. When sale shopping, stick to items on your list. This should limit naughty, impulsive buying and remember to buy with your head, not your heart.

  4. Avoid looking at the reduction. This is a technique used to lure you into parting with your cash. Instead buy based on price alone!

  5. We buy clothes because we love them but before making your purchase really think about what reasons you are buying it for ... is it because it is cheap? To help you make this decision think about what else your item will go with in your existing wardrobe and then work out how much potential wear you will get out of it.

  6. Some items may be marked down because it’s faulty, so always give your item a full check before you buy, as some sale policies won’t allow you to return an item!

  7. Take advantage of the services of a sales assistant: If you can't see the item you are after, they might be able to locate stock in another store or in the back room. Be prepared to wait for their services as they're bound to be busy!

  8. If the thought of making a trip into town is too much for you then there is nothing better than sitting at your computer and making the necessary purchases online. You will have to pay postage and packing but it is a great feeling knowing that you are not getting caught up in the crowds. The discounts that you get off your items will contribute to the postage and packing costs, so all in all a great option!

  9. Always make sure at the time of purchase to check what the stores return policy is, they all differ and sometimes for sale items the policies are different to the normal ones. This will also save you time because you could potentially get away with buying an item without trying it on rather than queuing at a busy changing room and then return it at a later date if it’s not suitable. Also, some stores won’t give full refunds on sale goods so please be aware of that.

Career highlight to date?

Getting my first job as a web designer many years ago, that was the start of everything! The reaction to Online Fashion 100 was great, so that was definitely a highlight too.

Fondest childhood memory?

Well, two memories which have possibly set me up for what I do today are going to The Clothes Show with my parents and getting a PC/the internet for the first time.

Most stylish country and why?

The internet - one day the web will have country status!

What’s the best and worst thing about digital marketing within fashion?
It's great for me as it mixes in fashion with technology (I can be geeky when required)!

Most stylish haunt in London?

The web is more stylish than any physical place can ever be for anyone; simply because as subjective and personal as style is, there's a website or online community for us all.

What’s all this I hear about your new venture... tell me more!

The Online Fashion Agency is an expert resource on fashion websites. We'll be helping shoppers by recommending where they should shop online and show them ways to save money. Plus we'll be providing industry news to retailers and people who want to set up their own fashion websites.

We're launching with the fashion and beauty division of Amethyst Group, which provides warehousing and fulfilment solutions to retailers, and Olswang, a firm specialising in media and retail law.

If you could work with any fashion brand who would it be and why?

dVb, which is Victoria and David Beckham's brand. They're in need of a rich web experience to enhance their fashion and beauty offering - with the right strategy they could easily have the most visited fashion website in the UK within 18 months, and make a tidy profit (not that they need it!).

Most inspirational person in online fashion?

Everyone in the Online Fashion 100 list, including you guys at iStylista!

Any advice and tips you can give to someone looking to get into digital marketing within the fashion industry?

Follow the market. Every day you should read up on who's doing what and analyse why; just be aware of what's going on and think about how things can work better. Of course, subscribe to the newsletter from The Online Fashion Agency!

What’s next for Leon

I'm working with the team at Fashshot, the largest e-commerce photographers in the UK, on video production for fashion brands. We're producing a weekly online TV show for a major broadcaster which is exciting.

I'll be judging the Drapers Etail Awards again and as well as the Handbag.com Online Fashion Awards, which the public can vote in.

The Online Fashion Agency's consulting division will be keeping me busy too, particularly with online shoe store Shudoo.co.uk where we have some exciting things lined up for 2010.

Plus, I'm interviewing fashion bloggers for a fashion store Oli.co.uk's blog Style Notes.

There are other things in the pipeline too, which will be revealed soon!

  • The perfect pout
    The perfect pout

The key to luscious lips is to keep lips well moisturised so always carry a nourishing and hydrating lip balm with you.

To make your lips more defined, apply a neutral lip liner to the entire lip area both top and bottom as a base.

A strong lipstick colour is perfect to create a kissable pout, so select either reds or strong pinks. My favourite is Afterglow Cosmetics' Organic Lipstick in the colour 'Courage', which is very hydrating as it only contains natural ingredients.

Apply lipstick to both the top and bottom lips. Then, grab a tissue, place it on your lips, and gently press them together once to blot the excess lipstick away. Next, apply another coat of lipstick to enhance the colour. If you like the illusion of plump lips, use a clear gloss and apply this to just to the centre of the top and bottom lip area

This application technique may take a bit more time than you're used to, but you'll notice your lipstick stays on for much longer, which is worth the additional effort.

Answer: A single-breasted knee length trench or mac style coat with an open neckline and a nipped in waist will suit you best. Avoid belts or big pockets on the tummy area, as these details will add further bulk. Buying a bright coloured coat could be limiting so pick a neutral colour. Instead of black why not go for a navy, brown or grey neutral, or a subtle pattern, and constantly change the look of it by accessorising it with bright or printed silk scarves.

  • Emily Seares - The Fashion Journalist
Emily Seares - The Fashion Journalist
When and how did you get into fashion?

My first fashion job was at French Connection at the age of 16! However, after University I did a post-grad in magazine journalism, started working on the news desk at Retail Week, then moved over to ‘fashion bible’ Drapers. I stayed at Emap for about 3 years.

Your blog focuses around online fashion, where do you think fashion will go online?

Buying fashion online is fast becoming the norm for young shoppers, with the likes of Asos, Net-a-Porter and most recently Fashionair raising the bar for fashion retailers. Fashion websites are fantastic because they can be reactionary, enabling them to quickly adapt to new trends and feedback from customers. Concerns over the safety of purchasing online are also decreasing, as shoppers get more and more accustomed to buying goods online. I predict that online fashion retailers will see double digit sales growth continue for many years to come, and as returns and delivery options become easier, more and more shoppers will migrate online as well.

Favourite fashion brand and why?

I love high street brand Zara- fast fashion at its best! The brand has a 6 week stock turnover, which keeps the stores fresh and enticing. The price points are great- very affordable, and the clothing is on trend, fashionable and fits well.

Career highlight to date?

From a news journalist point of view, I wrote a story when I worked at Retail Week (about Woolworths running out of toys for Christmas) which got on to the front page of The Daily Telegraph - a first for Retail Week! From a fashion perspective, launching my own fashion/beauty blog www.fashionbite.co.uk, the feedback from readers has been fantastic.

What makes a good fashion blogger?

A good fashion blogger, or any blogger for that matter, has the ability to create an individual voice and style, whilst remaining true to their word. Blogging is opinion-based journalism- if you don’t post honest accounts, readers will see right through you. My blog is (hopefully!) engaging, fun and accessible to my readers. I offer a mix of news, website reviews and product launches (focusing on online fashion/beauty companies) the kind of thing I’d like to read myself.

Any tips for someone wanting to break into fashion journalism?

It’s a competitive industry but as with most things in life, if you’re passionate and determined you’ll go a long way. However, it’s also not as glamorous as it sounds- so I’d advise doing some work experience on a fashion magazine before paying for any courses- you might just change your mind!

Where do you get your inspiration to write?

I am constantly on the look out for exciting, new website launches, fashion labels or beauty brands for my blog and I regularly talk to people within the industry. The internet is a vast source of inspiration in itself, along with trade shows and press days.

What’s the future got in store for Emily?

I’m currently freelancing, writing fashionbite.co.uk and guest blogging on behalf of other companies. I hope to grow fashionbite into a successful brand one day and online is the perfect medium in which to do so!

Favourite pastime outside of work?

I used to live in Brighton, so I love to go down there and visit friends whenever I can. There’s nothing like fresh sea air (and great pubs) to clear the head!

  • Afterglow's exciting range of lipsticks
    Afterglow's exciting range of lipsticks

There’s a new and exciting brand of lipstick on the market... and one that promises to keep nasty, irritating ingredients such as synthetic preservatives well away from your lips. I think sometimes we forget just what we are putting on our lips (and ultimately into our bloodstream) and sacrifice quality for cheap products... because they are cheap!

Well, if you are conscious about toxic synthetics running around your body you need to get your mitts on a stick or two of the Afterglow range (there are 15 colours to choose from), which we recently trailed for ourselves.

The Review:

What was immediately apparent was the feel of the lipstick once on, it didn’t feel as oily as most other lipsticks, more creamy if you like. The second thing that is most noticeable is that your lips don’t tend to dry up, it’s like adding a creamy moisturiser to your lips. Thirdly, there’s no disgusting perfume taste left in your mouth... result! Finally, removal is incredibly simple and our lips felt... well, refreshed and moist rather than the normal dryness (and staining) so many other lipsticks leave you with.

Sticks retail at a respectable £22 for a 4g stick, but once you’ve tried it for yourself we’re confident you’ll be converted!

  • What's your relationship with money?
    What's your relationship with money?
We all enjoy a little retail therapy from time to time. The thrill of a new purchase, the flash of a credit card and the joy of the carrier bag or home delivery stuffed with goodies does wonders for the soul.

Yet sometimes our relationship with money can seriously undermine our sense of self; make us feel guilty and out of control and even jeopardize our health and safety.

Over-spending recklessly after an emotional response (anger, fear, insecurity, self pity, happiness) and running up debts is the external sign of an unhealthy relationship to cash and oneself.

It could even be that what you believe about yourself could be keeping you poor.

So here’s a quick work-out for your mind-set which may be keeping you stuck in breadline thinking as opposed to being fiscally fit.

Read these statements:

  • I wasn’t born wealthy so I’m never going to be rich
  • Lucky breaks happen to other people
  • Wanting a lot of money feels wrong and greedy
  • Nobody would like me if I was rich/ successful
  • I wouldn’t know how to spend it
  • I’m frightened of money/I don’t know how to handle it
  • If money comes easily it’s not worth anything
  • Money slips through my fingers
  • I feel guilty when I’m well off and others aren’t
  • I don’t deserve money
  • I deserve this – even if I can’t afford it
  •

If even one of these statements resonated with you then you have a flaw in your thinking that could be bankrupting you in more ways than you know. What would you have to believe about money and yourself which would change your current situation?

For example if you believe “people from where I come never do well/remain poor” you can see how it can be a self-fulfilling prophesy. Would the belief “I create my own opportunities and I deserve abundance” be more helpful?

Write out the beliefs that could be holding you back. Beliefs are not real, they just feel that way as they are the filters we see the world through and sometimes they can be entirely false. It is entirely possible to change them and create new perspectives and possibilities for yourself.

To help you be free of the pauper in your personality here is some homework for you to do which will help you unravel some of the ideas you are holding on to which could be holding you back.

Start by completing these phrases:

  • Money is……………….?
  • Money is like …………...?
  • Making money is ………..?
  • Spending money is ……….?
  • Having money is …………..?

Working with a coach is a great way of unearthing limiting or damaging beliefs which could be stifling or sabotaging your progress. Imagine this -what if money wanted to come to your door but at present and the way you are thinking and acting around money, it is unable to come in? Are you barring its way?

It’s the difference between being a money magnet attracting abundance or living in deficit thinking. Which one are you?

1. Colour

A great way to update your look from Spring/Summer to Autumn/Winter is with a change of colour. For blondes, think Sarah Harding and go for block panels of colour, in icy cool tones to add depth rather than highlights. If you are a fiery redhead, go for a rich, warm shades, think violet or plum and stay away from copper and ginger tones. For brunettes, stay dark for Autumn/Winter 09, cooler shades will be hot next season, so think dark bitter chocolate rather than the softer milk chocolate hues.

2. Cut

Barbarella Meets Chrissie Hynde – its rock chick and attitude all the way. Think fringe, fringe, fringe this winter! From the 80’s to the noughties, move away from the sweeping longer versions and be bold with a heavier block style – rounder and thicker than in the summer months. Gossip Girls, Taylor Momsen is already rocking this look so it’s sure to be hot! Adding a fringe can completely update your look and suits both long and short styles.

3. Styling

When it comes to styling and shape, remember volume, volume and more volume... The best way to achieve volume is by using the right products and tools. Use a large round hairbrush and Try Tigi Bed Head Superstar – Queen for a Day. Spray onto damp hair and blow dry for long lasting body and volume. Or Matrix Amplify Root Lifter spray.

4. Texture

Texture is also going to be big for Autumn/Winter. For big sexy curls, think heated or Velcro rollers. For a tighter curl bring out your curling irons or wands. Whether your hair is long or short, tousle with your fingers or brush through your curls to create soft feminine waves, bounce and body. Think Coco before Chanel glamour.

5. Top of the crops

The pixie elfin look is going to be grown out with softer lines and texture for Autumn/Winter, think elegant and sophisticated – Posh Spice meets Audrey Tatou in Coco before Chanel.

  • How to create smoky eyes
    How to create smoky eyes

To successfully create this look it’s important to remember that blending is key. Mineral based eye shadows, like the ones from Afterglow Mineral Cosmetics, are perfect for this look as they are highly pigmented and blend very well.

Step 1 - apply a dark liquid eyeliner - preferably brown, grey or black - close to the upper lash line.
Step 2 - choose a light, neutral colour as the base colour and cover your entire eye lid.
Step 3 - apply the darker tone close to the eye lashes and use a good quality eyeshadow brush to blend upwards. Make sure to blend colour into the lash line so the eye liner disappears.

Hey presto... smoky eyes!

Paige started out in fashion by interning at London Fashion Week as a graduate. She then moved onto Head of Communications for the Ann Summers Group, a position many people would die for. Originally from South Africa, Paige now lives in South West London where she fronts and runs her successful boutique fashion marketing agency, Bright Light PR.

What made you want to set up a Fashion PR Agency?

I’ve been in the fashion industry for years and have always loved the high octane environment, but I had always previously worked in big in-house departments. As much as I loved my job I yearned to develop a closer relationship with my clients as a ‘hands on’ creative and innovator rather than an executive at the end of an email or phone chain. I’d thought about starting my own agency for some time but it wasn’t until the birth of my first child, ironically, that I finally bit the bullet. I needed to be more flexible and my time off gave me the opportunity to really look into it - I found that there was a niche in the market for an agency that combined the accountability of a large agency with the unique, personal touch that a smaller team could provide. In 2005, Bright Light PR was born in spare room in my family home with just one client! Four years later on we occupy two offices and boast an extensive client list.

What’s a typical Day in your life?

No two days are ever the same in PR – that’s why I’m so passionate about it! I can be in a strategic meeting with a board of directors and brainstorming press release ideas one day then off to view my client’s latest collections and attending a photo shoot the next! My clients are based all over the country from Scotland to Devon and even further afield in Paris and Sweden so I am very lucky in getting to travel all over. I’m not saying its all glitz and glamour but working in such a fast-pace environment does tend to be pretty exciting and incredibly rewarding!

Which prominent business person inspires you?

I am inspired by many business people but especially by people who are able to find success against all the odds and by someone who is able to influence changes within their industry or within society such as Dame Anita Rodick or pioneers within their field such as Lorraine Heggessey the first ever female controller of BBC1.

Out of all the fashion brands out there who would be your dream client?

My dream client would without doubt be Chanel. It has such a beautiful heritage behind it and their collections provide timeless elegance yet still manage to push boundaries season after season. The result has to be every PR’s dream; those coveted interlocking C’s have become to represent more than a brand, they’re iconic. I’d have loved to be a part of that!

Hottest item in your wardrobe at the moment?

Hmm, I’d probably have to go for my Marc Jacobs safari jacket. I bought it seasons ago in the sale but it just never seems to go out of fashion. I can team it with a high waisted pencil and heels for a pitch or jeans and gladiators when I go to the coast with my family – it’s just so versatile!

Favourite country to visit and why?

Obviously I love going to see my family back home but outside of Africa I’d go for France. Whether it’s the eclectic styling and magnificent sights in Paris, the enchanting Riviera or the serene tranquillity of the Dordoigne I find myself never wanting to come home!

Best and worse things about the British fashion industry?

In terms of innovation I think that the British fashion industry far outstrips any other. We are constantly embracing our young designers, their techniques and obscure new materials but at the same time I think that it can be incredibly fickle. Whether it’s a model, designer, celebrity or even a journalist or blogger, so-and-so will be the next big think in September but can be all but forgotten by February. I mean look at the uproar surrounding Mark Fast’s use of curvier models in his show at Fashion Week. You wouldn’t believe that this time last year he underwent a similar criticism for solely producing collections for girls deemed too skinny!

If you were allowed a supermarket sweep in any store who would it be and why?

At the moment I’d have to choose Gap. The high street has had to start getting really competitive and this season has seen Gap really step up their game. They’ve undergone a complete revamp and I just can’t get enough of those peg-leg chinos! I think I am going to have to get a pair of their xx boots.

Advice to budding fashionistas looking to get into fashion PR today?

Obviously the climate is much tougher now than it was when I started Bright Light, as is the competition, so firstly I’d say persevere. But I’d say the absolute key to creating a successful agency is through making contacts – developing a good relationship with the press is integral, get your name and your agency’s out there; let’s face it, no-one’s going to let you look after their PR when you can’t manage your own!

  • Would you shell out £10,000 on your child's wardrobe?
Would you shell out £10,000 on your child's wardrobe?

Picture this, you’re in Harvey Nichols and a rail with the latest designer clothing is wheeled in front of you... but it’s not for you, it’s for your one year old. The first question that pops into our heads is ‘are you so vain that you want your child to have a Fendi scarf worth hundreds of pounds, just because you can afford it’?

Well, obviously some people are because the service has taken off for the store. Loaded mums are queuing up to get their children kitted out with this new must-have accessory. According to the in house personal shopper ‘It’s mainly high-powered working women who don’t have time to do it themselves.’

Mums are shelling out tens of thousands of pounds on designer kids clothes, but is this just because they see their ‘designer kids’ as a fashion accessory to themselves I wonder... I mean a baby grow for £5 is surely the same as one for £100, isn’t it?

‘Fair enough’ I hear you say ‘if they can afford it then why not’, but surely you have to draw the line at diamond earrings, handbags and jewellery, as a child would grow up with the wrong values... am I wrong?

Now the question is: Is this an initial lesson in fashion or a revolting consumerism?
