Suits for women became a lot more common during the 19th century when women began to wear them for day to day activities. Trouser suits, for instance, were introduced in the 1890’s when cycling became very popular among women and it proved virtually impossible for them to ride their bikes in long skirts.

The early 20th century, however, witnessed a radical change in both fashion and attitudes in wider society, with women making a stand for their rights and liberation. Styles turned androgynous and women ditched the layered oversized dresses, corsets and pinned up hair do’s, (which usually took 2 hours to perfect), adopted a distinctive look, and became known as "flappers".

Coco Chanel was the prominent designer of this period, creating much more comfortable clothing with simpler lines which prompted the ‘flat chested’ look. The 1920’s-30’s was, and still is, remembered as the era of Coco, a period that gave birth to a "new breed" of young women who wore short skirts, cut their hair into a bob style, bound their breasts and listened to jazz. These women were known as garçonnes, (feminine looking boys), and they helped to shape the future for the females of today. They began wearing the clothes that reflected their new lifestyles and privileges, including having the right to vote and engaging in paid work outside the home. The suit soon became the most popular day-time city attire, and were finally being created for females, with light weight fabrics used to make womanly cocktail suits featuring beautiful detailing.

By the late 20th century it was common to see women in both skirt and trouser suits, with trousers being seen as more casual and skirts as more formal. This is still the case today.

The suit has come a long way since the 1660’s and today’s suit designs are endless. Different colours with various mix-and-match garments, like shorts, flares, big shoulders, high waists; the list goes on. The one thing that all these suits have in common, however, are that they
possess the ability to make you feel powerful, look smart and create a good first impression.

Because you know what they say........ FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE THE MOST LASTING.
