Are you falling foul to internet fashion fraud?

The Telegraph recently revealed that thousands of consumers are being tricked into buying cheap fakes (including fashions) online by firms claiming they are UK based but are in fact often in China.

Most of these sites have a .co.uk domain, which obviously leads you to think they are UK based. The scary thing is that officially estimate that there are upwards of 480,000 of these sites selling a range of goods from designer clothing to hair straighteners.

An alarming fact is that a huge 6% of people registering .co.uk domains are in fact from foreign companies, mostly China in fact. It won’t be long until UK domain registrations will have to be accompanied with a fixed UK address, like our European cousins. This needs to happen sooner rather than later so as to clamp down on all the fake rubbish that’s being sold online, and ultimately hurting the true designer brands.

TOP 3 WAYS TO SPOT A FAKE WEBSITE

Before you buy anything on a website that is unfamiliar to you we suggest you do a little more research.

  1. Go to www.whois.net and plug in the details of the website. This tool is free, takes seconds to use and will reveal exactly where the website is based.
  2. If you are really unsure as to whether the site is untrustworthy email the site with some probing questions about the products, delivery and their location. If there are no contact details available... stay well away!
  3. Stay well away from domains that tend to have numbers in (e.g. 2008NIKE.COM). This is the first way of telling a counterfeit site.
