Your ideal capsule wardrobe:

Trousers: (Quantity - 2-4 pairs) one pair of casual trousers, one pair of jeans and two pairs of smart trousers.

Skirts: (2-3) one casual patterned skirt, one casual skirt and one smart skirt.

Shirts/Blouses: (2) one plain shirt and one patterned shirt.

Tops: (6-8) a mixture of plain and patterned – mainly casual.

Shoes: (4 pairs) two pairs of comfortable flats for the day and two pairs of heels for the evening.

Jacket: (3) two casual well fitting jackets and one smart jacket.

Stylish additions: smart heeled shoes/boots, scarves, unique jewellery, a cashmere cardigan/wrap/jumper/twin-set, a pashmina, 2 leather handbags, a favourite dress.

Style tips:
  • Choose interesting shirts that you can dress up with a belt, scarf or beads.
  • Look for plain, luxury and good quality fabrics.
  • Be sure to buy all of your essential items such as trousers, skirts, jackets and coats in neutral colours.
  • Invest in some designer jeans that flatter your figure.

    Why the 'neutral colours'??? Are we supposed to 'disappear' when we retire? All of us will have our favourite colours (mine is red)which we had to forego when at work in favour of (yes you've guessed) neutral coloured 'career wear'. Retirement is the time to live a little!
