Hair Style trends for 2010
It’s hard not to notice the variations of gigantic updos that have been filling the streets. Pumpkin-sized buns, either knotted or ballerina style, are key trends for this years hair styling.

The boundaries have been pushed, with the buns placed directly on the top of the head, or to the side. Varieties of textures are created to achieve that slightly messy, sexy look. You can add instant volume by using a fine tooth comb or brush to back-comb sections, and coating in a mist of hairspray. Use plenty of kirby grips to secure the sections of hair at random around a ponytail, tousling loose strands as you go. A perfect trend for summer.
Plaits have to be the biggest trend for 2010. Catwalks have seen plaited hair in all different shapes and sizes, whether sleek and tight worn like hair architecture, or matte and roughly textured, worn over the shoulder. Be creative with your braiding, going for a full-head of plaits or subtle, feminine patterns to frame the face. Whatever your taste or hair type, anyone can join the braid parade.
2010 is all about textured hair, the more the better! Another great technique for adding texture is crimping. Ruffle your crimped hair for added volume, and sculpt the top section into an exaggerated beehive. Tame flyaway strands with hairspray, or leave them loose for casual wear.
Headscarves are bigger now than they were last year, used to add colour and pattern into any hair style. Wear double, narrow head bands at the front of the hairline or wide head bands low across the forehead. Create knots and bows to tie in with the 2010 trends, or wrap round your updos to tame holiday hair. Alternatively, add a separate bow to be completely on trend this year. You can even add a hair bow a la Lady Gaga.
Long and Luxe
We are going back to the 70’s with long hair styles, offering a romantic vibe that is innocently sexy. A centre parting being key to this look, with a small amount of product to tame the hair, leaving it to flow as natural. This is the equivalent of the ‘no makeup’ makeup look. Tousled, matted waves form the quintessential California look, so get the tongs at the ready.
Celebrities such as Cheryl Cole and Blake Lively love this look with a side parting, with the hair brought round to fall over one shoulder. This screams elegance and sophistication, for the ultimate classy evening wear.
Deep set, well defined partings have been seen all over the catwalk this year, with short or long hair, tied up or loose. If you don’t like a parting, how about slicking your hair back tight to the head, securing it in place with plenty of hairspray and leaving the rest loose? Wife of Will Smith, Jada Pinkett opted for this catwalk-inspired hairstyle to really bring out her facial features, she looked gorgeous! Festival go’ers are also sporting this look, as it is easy to create with even the dirtiest of hair. This wet looks brings a really modern, androgynous feel.
Fringes and frolics
A blunt cut fringe is a quick and easy way to update any hair cut and varying the length of the fringe can totally change the whole look. Celebrities such as Katy Perry and Beyonce have sported a rounded, short cut fringe, going for that Bettie Page pin-up style.
You must have noticed the half shaved hair cuts that are so surprisingly sexy. Amelle from Mystique, Rihanna and Cassie all pull off this look beautifully. However if like me you don’t have the guts to get the clippers to your hair, how about achieving the faux-shaved look by tightly braiding or twisting small sections close to the scalp?
2010 has seen hair styling revert back to relaxed, low key styles for those effortlessly chic looks and oversized, frizzed out updos to contrast.
