Some useful advice on selecting your best colours

Sometimes I’m asked to choose my favourite colour, and I find that I can’t do that without knowing what that colour is to be used for. I’ve realised that the reason for this is that I have two sets of favourite colours.

How do these colours make you feel inside?

I call these internal colours and external colours. The internal colours are the colours that I choose when I want to express who I am. Certain colours resonate with my sense of self – my character, my personality, my values. These are the colours that I choose to wear because I think of my clothes as an expression of who I am. By contrast, my external colours are the ones I want to be surrounded by. These are the colours that I feel I need – to change my mood, to refresh me, to comfort me, to envelop me in warmth. These are the colours that I choose for my house – for the walls of the different rooms, for the soft furnishings and carpets etc.

So when developing your own personal style, think about the colours that express who you are. Do you see yourself as passionate and fiery reds and oranges, as down-to-earth and grounded terracottas and ochres, as cool but empathetic sea blues and greens, as dramatic black, or as subtly stylish and poised neutrals such as bone and camel? What characteristics do you want to communicate to the world? A real sense of style comes from expressing your true self rather than emulating others. So take time to find out who you really are.
