This winter take a tip from Jennifer Aniston: How to wear tweed’s new style

Tweed is no longer the domain of country gents; celebs such as Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow and Vivienne Westwood are now wearing the fabric created by Harris Tweed. Initiated when the widow of the Earl of Dunmore, Lady Dunmore, requested the Murray tartan be recreated in tweed by the weavers at Harris back in 1846, tweed became a popular fabric after she promoted it to her acquaintances. Nowadays tweed is making a comeback, and you can benefit.

Jennifer Aniston Wears Dolce & Gabbana Tweed Dress

Not that further evidence is needed of its reputation, but Jennifer Aniston has been spotted wearing a tailored Dolce & Gabbana tweed dress boasting a short hemline and fringed edges. Available online is Victoria Beckham’s number: a 1950’s-influenced speckled tweed dress.

There is a wrong way to wear tweed

• Top-to-toe-tweed is out. Team a tweed jacket with jeans or a skirt. Avoid looking like a matron by mixing colours and materials.
• Accessorise using a colour from your tweed item. Tweed is renowned for its mix of colours – pair a necklace, handbag or scarf in a colour from your tweed.
• Look sharp in a tweed jacket, silk or satin blouse, dark jeans and high-heeled boots.
• Alternatively, combat tweed’s sombre mood by pairing with it a hooded top in a neutral colour and casual pants and handbag.
• Grab a jacket in feminine pinks (see Sarah Jessica Parker!), pastel blues and beige and team it with a short skirt – or pair of shorts – or wear your black/grey tweed jacket with tailored jeans or leather pants.

Get your guy in tweed this winter

Rumour has it that Harris Tweed is teaming with Thomas Pink to create a range of sports jackets for the upcoming 2010 autumn/winter period. Break your guy into tweed slowly, using these tips:

• Plain shirts (or shirts with a light stripe) teamed with a tweed jacket sporting a favourite colour of his, and a tie in a shade darker than the jacket are sure to please.
• A great investment for winter work days would be a heavy tweed jacket, but make sure it’s tailored well. Better than a woollen coat, they look great over a dark suit.
• Your guy should only consider wearing a full tweed suit if he is capable of wearing fitted suits - and the cut is current.
